Transfer Guides are designed to maximize transfer credit as students complete their associate degree at the community college before transferring to the bachelor's degree program. If you are a current Virginia Community College student or are planning to start at a Virginia Community College before transferring to this institution and program, please follow the Transfer Guide to plan your courses at the community college. The following Transfer Guide(s), applicable to this program, are available in the Resource Center. If there is a program-specific Transfer Guide and a general or general studies Transfer Guide, you are advised to follow the program-specific Transfer Guide. Please see your community college advisor for assistance in selecting the best pathway.
The bachelor's degree program provides essential underpinnings in the theory and design methods of civil and infrastructure engineering for engineering practice. Students benefit from exposure to practical civil, environmental, and infrastructure engineering problems and their solutions in the classroom, lab, and field. Civil engineering students can look forward to a career in local, state, and federal government organizations, and in architectural and engineering firms that specialize in land development, transportation, water resources, environment, structures, geotechnical, construction, and other related fields. The program also prepares students for continuing graduate studies for sophisticated practice, research, and teaching. The bachelor’s program in civil and infrastructure engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org.
Outcomes
The educational objectives of the Civil and Infrastructure Engineering program describe expectations for graduates approximately three to five years after obtaining their degree. Graduates of the program will be professionals who: -Engage in the engineering practice of planning, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining sustainable infrastructure; -Participate in public discussions concerning infrastructure in the urban, suburban, and exurban setting by providing professional guidance; -Stay current through continuing education opportunities, professional conferences, graduate school, and other self-learning experiences; have the ability to obtain and maintain professional licensing.
Program Overview & Guidance

| Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
|---|---|
| Considerations for Selecting Degree | As infrastructure continues to age, civil engineers will be needed to manage projects to rebuild, repair, and upgrade bridges, roads, levees, dams, airports, buildings, and structures of all types. If you have a passion for engineering work that will impact the quality of human lives and want to earn a decent salary while doing so, then civil engineering might be the right major for you |

| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Connect with an advisor if you are uncertain whether a course will transfer to Mason.
|
| Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | While not a program requirement, we strongly encourage students to obtain relevant experience through co-ops or internships for careers in civil engineering. Consider obtaining professional certifications such as the Engineer in Training (EIT), which is available to recent graduates and current undergraduate students enrolled in accredited programs. You can obtain detailed information from the NCEES website: https://ncees.org/engineering/fe/ Join the American Society of Civil Engineers to participate in projects and activities to increase marketability beyond graduation. |
| Doing More With Your Degree | A degree in civil engineering can also prepare you for a job in business, project management, and finance. |
| Program Successes & Highlights | We have a strong Civil Engineering Institute Board, which is comprised of engineering leaders from industry, government, and academia. Read about the department’s activities and accomplishments in our annual report found here: https://civil.gmu.edu/about/annual-report |
