Bioengineering, also referred to as biomedical engineering, is the application of engineering tools and approaches to solve problems in biology and medicine. It is a broad and growing ?eld that draws upon rapid advances in technology and computation, as well as on unprecedented growth in basic biological understanding. This program provides i) a scientific foundation in math, physics, biology, chemistry and physiology; ii) broad introductions to bioengineering technology platforms of medical imaging, devices, computational biomedical engineering, computational neuroscience and neurotechnology, biomaterials and nanomedicine, and health care informatics followed by a deepening of knowledge in at least one of these areas through a chosen concentration; and iii) translational courses showing how new technologies can be implemented in clinical medicine and be commercialized by industry partners. Engineering design experiences are built into each year of the curriculum culminating in a senior design project. The impact of engineering, technologies and computer science on biomedicine is immense, and can only be harnessed through integrative multidisciplinary training in Bioengineering. With the growing demand for better health care, the need for bioengineers is expected to be high. The multidisciplinary training in this ?eld makes graduates competitive for positions in government and in biomedical industry. The BS in Bioengineering also enables students to continue their education in graduate school or medical school.
Outcomes
Graduates of the Bioengineering bachelor’s program are expected within 3-5 years of graduation to: • Contribute to the development of engineering technologies and/or solutions for improvement of human health and health care in diverse populations.• Engage in professional and leadership development activities, advanced degree programs, and/or other post-graduate opportunities.• Communicate and perform effectively as members and/or leaders of multidisciplinary teams. • Understand the ethical and social implications and consequences of their work.
Program Overview & Guidance

| Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
|---|---|
| Considerations for Selecting Degree | Bioengineering combines the sciences with engineering principles and applies them to the human body. An excellent grasp of math, biology, physics, chemistry, and logic is required for this degree as it builds the foundation of all ensuing coursework. As a bioengineer, you will be able to work industries including biopharmaceuticals, biomedical device engineering, or government agencies like the, i.e. US patent office, and in bio-consulting for healthcare, including clinical settings, instrumentation engineering. | Doing More With Your Degree | Did you ever consider to study abroad? Join Mason Bioengineering and spend a semester in Spain or a summer in Europe. You can also choose to take our BENG 417 class to spend 3 weeks in Guatemala to work with clinicians in remote hospital. Consider our Accelerated BS/MS program, which can be completed in 5 years = 4 yrs (BS) + 1 yr (MS). Typically, an MS program takes 2 years to complete. |
