The School of Nursing offers a traditional curriculum in the baccalaureate program as well as the online R.N.-B.S. completion. Successful completion of curricular requirements results in a Bachelor of Science degree. Note that the applicant is responsible for seeking advice from the School of Nursing on courses taken prior to admission. The goal of the VCU School of Nursing Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is to prepare students with foundational competencies as nurse generalists for entry into professional nursing practice.

Considerations for Selecting Degree This degree is physically demanding and has minimum functional standards that can be found in the VCU Bulletin. This degree also requires a set number of hours of hands-on experience caring for individuals of all ages in a variety of settings including hospitals, community settings, and outpatient clinics. This degree cannot be completed fully online.

To be considered for admission to the School of Nursing, applicants must: Be eligible for readmission or be in good standing at the last college or university attended Submit a completed application with all required materials to the School of Nursing Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 based on a scale of 4.0 on all college course work Present no grades lower than C- in all parts of anatomy, physiology and microbiology courses (Anatomy, physiology and microbiology courses must be taken within 10 years of starting the nursing program.) Present no grades lower than C- in any other prerequisite or collateral course Provide additional information with the application according to the English language proficiency guidelines for applicants who are international or non-native English speakers without a degree from a U.S. high school, college or university. (Additional information can be found on the VCU International Admissions website.) Complete the following prerequisites prior to starting the nursing program: BIOL 101 and BIOZ 101 or BIOL 151 and BIOZ 151; BIOL 205; BIOL 217; PSYC 101; SOCY101 or ANTH 103; UNIV 111; and UNIV 112. Complete the following collateral requirements prior to beginning nursing courses: PHIS 206 and PHIZ 206; BIOL 209 and BIOZ 209 or BIOL 303 and BIOZ 303; STAT 208, STAT 210, or STAT 2112; and PSYC 304.

Considerations When Selecting Courses

Courses transferred to VCU to satisfy any prerequisite or collateral requirements must have no grade lower than a C-. Cumulative GPA must be at least a 2.5 or better.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year

Program Successes & Highlights This program is ranked in the top 5% of all BS nursing programs by U.S. News and World Report. Our current five-year NCLEX-RN pass rate on the first attempt is 90%.

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Students who earn an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Science, General Education Certificate, or Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System, Richard Bland College, or the College of Southern Maryland may be eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Admission Agreement. Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived.

Students who have earned a transfer-oriented associate degree from any regionally accredited institution or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System before enrolling at VCU will have their General Education requirements satisfied. The Associate of Science in Science or Health Science is recommended for this major. Applicants should plan to complete the Nursing prerequisites in their first year and apply to VCU Nursing in Spring of their first year.

Some degree programs like Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Engineering have more competitive GPA requirements. Admission to programs in VCU Arts is also based on an evaluation of additional application materials and may be more competitive. Transfer applicants with fewer than 24 earned semester (36 quarter) hours will also be reviewed based on their high school GPA.
