The Department of Nursing offers a four-year (pre-licensure) program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. Built on a strong science foundation, the program includes coursework in the liberal arts and humanities and extensive clinical experiences in both healthcare settings and in the clinical simulation laboratory. The Nursing program includes a final semester intensive practicum. In addition, the Department of Nursing offers an RN to BSN Degree Completion Program for nurses who have graduated from accredited associate degree programs and are licensed as a Registered Nurse. The department contributes to the university's mission by developing Citizen Leaders who can meet the health care needs of our region, our state and beyond. Longwood has a chapter of the Student Nurses Association, linking our students to other nursing students nationwide. The department and program are approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing and the Virginia State Council on Higher Education. The baccalaureate program at Longwood University is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.aacn.nche.edu/ccne-accreditation). To ensure students have a fundamental understanding of core competencies, minimum grade of C must be earned in every pre/co-requisite to nursing courses, all courses listed under nursing major requirements, and additional degree requirements. Nursing courses must be completed in the defined sequence (i.e. NURS 210 and NURS 220 must be completed prior to taking NURS 230). A cumulative G.P.A. of 2.75 must be achieved by the beginning of each fall semester or students will forfeit their seat in the nursing program. Students who do not progress to the next NURS course due to a grade in the prerequisite course, failure, withdrawal, or postponed enrollment for any reason will be considered on delayed progression. Students are subject to specified course grading and progression requirements listed in the Nursing Student Handbook.
Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | The Nursing degree is science-intensive, as those foundational courses are the basis for which Nursing decisions are made. These courses include Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, and Pathophysiology. Satisfactory performance in these courses with a minimum grade of C required. Our program is fully in-person, with only the Research course being offered online. You are required to have transportation by spring of your Sophomore year, as you will be attending clinical experiences off-campus. Clinical experiences are within a 60 mile radius from campus. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
To begin at Longwood in stride with your peers in the Nursing program, it’s important that you have completed the foundation courses prior to Sophomore year. These include Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Developmental Psychology, as well as Statistics. These can be taken at the community college and transferred in. In order to enter as a Sophomore Nursing major, you would need to have at least 30 transferrable credits applied to the BSN degree. Also important to note is that Longwood requires a world language. In order for Nursing majors to get this completed prior to beginning clinical experiences off-site, they must take the first language course during freshman year.
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
Doing More With Your Degree | Nursing majors will sometimes choose minors which align with their degree program and field. These can include Biology, Psychology, and Health Education. Choosing a minor in these disciplines can afford you the opportunity of some of your current classwork counting for both your major & minor. During the spring semester of your senior year, each Nursing major will complete a 180-hour internship. This can be completed at any acute-care facility in the Commonwealth of Va that we have an affiliation agreement with. Students are allowed to submit their top 3 requests for placement. |
Program Successes & Highlights | The BSN program at Longwood University has been very successful, as evidenced by achieving a 100% first-time pass rate on the NCLEX licensure exam 4 out of the past 6 years. By the time students graduate from our BSN program, at least 80% have secured employment as a future Registered Nurse. |
