Considerations for Selecting Degree

The mission of our nursing program is to provide a holistic approach to educating the future professional nurse in a collaborative, interprofessional culture in preparation for lives of promoting client-centered healing and health to culturally diverse individuals and populations in our communities. Our nurses will be prepared to actively engage and contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession through lifelong learning, leadership, scholarship and service.

* In the classroom we will synthesize knowledge derived from liberal arts, nursing, science, and life experience to provide professional nursing care. Utilizing learning experiences of lecture and discussion, role play, case studies, technology and presentations.

* Student/Faculty interaction is enhanced by our low student to professor ratio. The engagement of the students is developed by assigning a mentor to help navigate problem solving and career planning that assists students in reaching their full personal potential and meeting future professional goals.

* Our state of the art facility including several simulation labs, live patient (actors), high fidelity mannequins, including a birthing Mom and infants, creates an interactive learning environment producing technical skills, ability to do physical examinations and nursing procedures.

* Our practicum allows students to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in a wide variety of healthcare situations including hospitals, long-term care facilities, free clinics, home healthcare agencies and much more.

* Students need to be able to travel to clinical sites. Clinical experiences are usually scheduled during the regular work week, but some experiences may only be available during evening and weekend hours. Nursing is a demanding program, well worth your efforts, but will take your time and attention. Nursing courses are taught by Emory & Henry Faculty members, and utilize a state of the art facility housed in our Health Sciences building in Marion, Virginia. We welcome prospective students to come and tour the facility and a virtual tour of much of our offerings can be viewed in this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjI9M4JJgZE

Considerations When Selecting Courses

For transfer or students with dual enrollment, there may be courses needed that are not routinely included in a general studies associate’s degree. Our registrar will need to review and send an evaluation of transcripts and advised what other course work may be needed. For students taking dual enrollment who wish to enter the School of Nursing, a nursing advisor will be designated to you to ensure students are taking the correct prerequisites for nursing when entering the first year at Emory & Henry College. If you are a transfer student who is earning an AA, AS, or AAS degree and intend to transfer to nursing, please connect with nursing admissions to ensure you are taking the correct prerequisites for nursing while pursuing your associates degree.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Emory & Henry University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses Once all the prerequisites have been taken, students will need to apply to the School of Nursing (typically the beginning of their sophomore year). Students need to ensure that they maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better. Students need to be prepared to travel to the health sciences campus and to clinical placement sites. Students are not required to travel abroad, but are required to complete Lyceums. All nursing students must be CPR Healthcare Provider certified from the American Heart Association and complete a background check prior to beginning nursing classes. There will be items such as lab coats, uniforms etc. that will need to be purchased once accepted into the School of Nursing.
Doing More With Your Degree To meet the needs of the 21st century, employers are looking for nurses who provide high quality care, can demonstrate critical thinking skills, and can assist patients in navigating an increasingly complex healthcare system, with increased focus on health promotion. Earning your BSN will open doors professionally, broadening career possibilities, and achieving a higher income. It is the next step to pursuing a graduate studies including a MSN or Doctoral degree providing additional professional and career opportunities. (Emory & Henry College will begin offering the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Fall 2023 with a choice of Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) with priority seating to our alumni)
Program Successes & Highlights

E&H has a long tradition in providing a high quality liberal arts education. Today’s health professionals need critical thinking and communication skills. An education rooted in the liberal arts and sciences provides a strong foundation to meet increasingly complex healthcare needs. Tomorrow’s healthcare professionals need to be prepared to think, not simply do. Our faculty and staff are dedicated to student education and success. The School of Nursing faculty have rich and varied clinical experiences and have published widely including a recent book, titled Rural Health Nursing: Barriers and Benefits in 2022.

* Accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (https://www.ccneaccreditation.org)

* Initial approval by Virginia State Board of Nursing

* Prepares Post-licensure if professional development while it qualifies pre-licensure BSN graduates to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Completion of the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program will guarantee completion of the 'Think, Understand & Create' liberal arts core component of the E&H undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major. Other elements of the core curriculum may need to be met if not taken as part of the AA/AS degree. Students will be required to complete CORE 200 and CORE 300 at E&H. Students completing at least 56 credits following high school graduation but before transferring to E&H are exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, and Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship.

Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School Only students who have completed college credit elsewhere following high school graduation will be exempt from the Core Curriculum requirement. Completion of courses that satisfy elements of the Care & Cultural Competency and Think, Understand & Create elements of the curriculum will be awarded equivalent credit with an earned grade of C or better. Students completing the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program concurrently with their high school diploma will not be exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, or Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship.
Credit for Prior Learning Emory & Henry awards credit for AP, IB, and CLEP. Please see the credit equivalency charts to determine the needed scores for course credit. Currently, we do not award academic credit for industry or military training.
