BA in Philosophy
Bachelor of ArtsHollins University
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program in Philosophy undertakes 1) to instruct students in the history of philosophy, both ancient and modern, 2) to train students in logic, critical thinking, the techniques of philosophical reasoning and writing, which will be of great value to you in life whatever you choose to do, and 3) to engage students with the essential issues in philosophy and a variety of other vitally important topics in philosophy. All philosophy majors share a common core of courses and are guided through a progressive sequence of courses through stipulated course requirements. The accomplishments of graduating students are evaluated through a capstone senior seminar in which students get to compose their own thesis on some important topic in Philosophy. Philosophy Majors and Minors have the opportunity each year to be on the Hollins Ethics Bowl Team, competing against fourteen other colleges and universities in Virginia.
Outcomes
SLO 1: Students will be able to identify and explain the broad fields of philosophical inquiry, including major figures and their contributions. SLO 2: Students will be able to generate an original philosophical thesis, placed within the context of current research, and defend it orally and in writing.
