The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a concentration in philosophy and science is an interdisciplinary curriculum requiring a minimum of 120 credits, with at least 30 of those credits in the major area, at least half of which must be upper-level. Students with a strong interest in the philosophy of science and the relation between philosophy and science (and those considering graduate work in an area of science) will probably want to choose the philosophy and science concentration.

Outcomes

Upon completing this program, students will be able to: Demonstrate a good knowledge of and facility with the methods and concepts of modern, analytic philosophy Demonstrate a good knowledge of the current state of academic discussion of some of the central philosophical topics Demonstrate some knowledge of the history of philosophy, including both major themes and movements and some specific figures and systems Demonstrate the ability to think critically and systematically about philosophical problems, both abstract and practical, and to write clearly and cogently about them Demonstrate the ability to construct and analyze arguments clearly and cogently, independently of their subject matter Demonstrate a good knowledge of philosophical questions about scientific inquiry including but not limited to questions about scientific explanation, the confirmation and disconfirmation of scientific theories, and what distinguishes science from non-science Demonstrate a good knowledge of a particular area of science including the research methods of that area of science

Considerations for Selecting Degree This degree emphasizes developing students' abilities to identify, analyze, evaluate and produce arguments (both philosophical and everyday arguments) skills useful in, and transferable to, a wide-variety of fields, e.g., law, healthcare, technology, policy development, business, etc.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Complete courses that are equivalent to VCU's lower-level philosophy courses. Most of upper-level philosophy courses have lower-level prerequisites.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Virginia Commonwealth University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree Philosophy majors can choose from four concentrations: Philosophy, Philosophy and Law, Philosophy and Science, and Ethics and Public Policy. The Philosophy Department offers a regular Philosophy Minor, a Philosophy of Law Minor, and a Micro Credential in The Ethics and Philosophy of AI.
Program Successes & Highlights The Department has a thriving Undergraduate Philosophy Club, which meets weekly for student presentations, faculty presentations and other activities. The Department houses free peer-tutoring for all of its philosophy courses.

Associate Transfer Degree Completion Students who earn an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Science, General Education Certificate, or Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System, Richard Bland College, or the College of Southern Maryland may be eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Admission Agreement. Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived.

Students who have earned a transfer-oriented associate degree from any regionally accredited institution or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System before enrolling at VCU will have their General Education requirements satisfied.

Some degree programs like Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Engineering have more competitive GPA requirements. Admission to programs in VCU Arts is also based on an evaluation of additional application materials and may be more competitive. Transfer applicants with fewer than 24 earned semester (36 quarter) hours will also be reviewed based on their high school GPA.
