Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | We teach a variety of introductory level classes and all Emory & Henry students are required to take one. These classes tend to be larger and more of a lecture format. The upper level RELG classes tend to be much smaller and are more seminar oriented. These classes are all taught by full time Religion faculty. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
The Religion major is 30 credits (27 + Math 120 or STATS) and is pretty flexible. There are some courses we only offer once every two years so students will want to enroll in those classes when they are available.
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | There is nothing required by the Religion Department that is beyond what is required by the College. Students are required to complete the study abroad experience and a math requirement, for example, but these are already required in the Emory & Henry Core Curriculum. Students will have the opportunity to complete an internship, but this is not required for the major. |
Doing More With Your Degree | It is easy to pair Religion with a second major, as our curriculum is flexible. Our majors go on to work in churches or other religious settings, but also go on to other professions such as college professorships, counseling, non-profit management, and college administration. The major will signal to employers that the student has developed important reading, writing, thinking, and communication skills. |
Program Successes & Highlights | Our graduates over the past 20 years have gone on to tremendous success. At least three are now Ph.D.'s teaching at their own colleges. Many are pastors at the largest churches in the Holston Conference. We also have bishops and church planters in other denominations. An Emory & Henry Religion Degree can clearly lead to vocational success for students interested in these pathways. |

What If I Have An Associate Degree Or Credit For Prior Learning?

Transfer Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Completion of the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program will guarantee completion of the 'Think,
Understand & Create' liberal arts core component of the E&H undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major. Other elements of the core curriculum may need to be met if not taken as part of the AA/AS degree. Students will be required to complete CORE 200 and CORE 300 at E&H. Students completing at least 56 credits following high school graduation but before transferring to E&H are exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, and Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship. |
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School | Only students who have completed college credit elsewhere following high school graduation will be exempt from the Core Curriculum requirement. Completion of courses that satisfy elements of the Care & Cultural Competency and Think, Understand & Create elements of the curriculum will be awarded equivalent credit with an earned grade of C or better. Students completing the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program concurrently with their high school diploma will not be exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, or Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship. |
Credit for Prior Learning | Emory & Henry awards credit for AP, IB, and CLEP. Please see the credit equivalency charts to determine the needed scores for course credit. Currently, we do not award academic credit for industry or military training. |
