MinorRandolph-Macon College
The minor in journalism is a rigorous preparation for a career in print media that culminates in work- shop style copy-editing courses and internships. Its goal is to produce students skilled in effective journalistic writing and editing, yet the journalism minor is more than simply vocational; it also aims to provide an historical knowledge and a sociological understanding of one of the shaping forces of our culture.
Program Overview & Guidance

| Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
|---|---|
| Considerations for Selecting Degree | JOUR minors take newswriting and reporting classes and create content to inform readers and help them make decisions in society. Minors also learn about the role of mass media in society today, how ethical dilemmas arise and are solved, under what conditions fake news has developed and is mistaken for legitimate information. JOUR students are very active in the Yellow Jacket newspaper, serving as reporters, section editors, as well as editor in chief. Those interested in broadcasting participate in Stinger radio studio productions. Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon. |
| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
COMM (Communication Studies) is the most common major for JOUR minors. Students may count some courses on both their JOUR minor as well as a COMM major, which makes that combination a popular choice. Students also frequently major in English (ENGL), Writing (WRIT), or Political Science (PSCI) while minoring in JOUR.
|
| Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | JOUR students, through their courses as well as their internships, develop media savvy skills to create interesting stories for their audiences, with attention to ethics, newsworthiness, and accuracy. They see their work in print or online as a result of those experiences. |
