A minimum grade of C is required in all HPEX core, health science core, clinical experiences and elective courses. Students cannot use more than one HPEX course (three credits) from the exercise science core as an elective.

Considerations When Selecting Courses

Prioritize meeting the pre-requisites for your first internship course, HPEX 395. This will ensure you are on track to meet the pre-requisites for your second internship course, HPEX 495. There are a number of broad assumptions as to which concentration best prepares students for allied professional graduate programs. The Health Science concentration was designed with framework for Community Health Education. Be sure to speak with someone in the Kinesiology and Health Sciences Department about which concentration of the degree you should enroll in!

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Virginia Commonwealth University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree Within their degree, Health Science students will be required to complete 360 hours of internship split across two courses (HPEX 395 – 120 hours; HPEX 495 – 240 hours). Outside of their primary degree, Health Sciences students may also consider pursuing a minor in Sport and Fitness Management.
Program Successes & Highlights All Health Science students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the workforce through their classes/internships. In addition, the curriculum was designed for students to obtain pre-requisites for graduate programs within four years. The Department also offers mentoring programs as well as events devoted to supporting students’ academic, professional, and personal development.
