The program leading to the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Human Services prepares students for entry-level positions in a wide variety of community services settings. Students in the program learn the roles and functions of the human services professional, characteristics of human growth and development; characteristics of human services agencies; theories and skills of human services; and the basics skills related to program evaluation, grant writing, and fundraising. The program also includes ethical, legal, and multi-cultural issues as they relate to the responsibilities of the human services professional. Professional writing skills are stressed in all coursework to ensure that students understand the importance of documentation requirements in the human services field as related to such issues as legally defensible case notes and justification for service billing.

Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Students must have a grade point average of 2.0 or above and have successfully completed ENGL 110C and ENGL 211C or ENGL 221C or ENGL 231C to enroll in major coursework. A grade of C or better must be earned in ENGL 110C and ENGL 211C or ENGL 221C or ENGL 231C to meet the undergraduate writing program requirement. Students must earn a grade of C (2.00) or better in all HMSV courses before taking the required internship their senior year.

Approved by the Virginia Certification Board as a provider of addiction education which can lead to Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) and Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) certification. What If I Have An Associate Degree Or Credit For Prior Learning?

Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Completion of the general education certificate or a transfer-oriented associate degree program will guarantee completion of the University Core general education component of the ODU undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major.
With a completed Associate of Science Degree from VCCS, students may enter ODU as a junior with lower division education requirements considered met as indicated in the pathway map. |
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School | With a completed transferrable Associate Degree from VCCS, students may enter ODU as a junior with lower division education requirements considered met as indicated in the pathway map. Even if the Associate Degree was completed concurrently while completing their high school requirements. |
