Associate of Applied Science in Human Services

Associate of Applied Science
J Sargeant Reynolds Community College

This program is included in: G3

The Human Services AAS degree is designed to prepare and provide students access to industry-based workforce credentials required for employement. (For more detailed information see Behavioral Health Technician CSC and Human Services Technician CSC.) The Human Services AAS provides individuals with the requisite knowledge, skills, professional ethics, and values common to jobs in the Human and Social Services sector, which includes opportunities for employment in mental health and autism spectrum disorders related services. Program Notes: A "stackable" curriculum has been designed to provide a progression of credentials, typically beginning from short term certificates and building to a college degree, in a specific program of study. Students who enroll in the Human Services AAS are enrolled in the third and final step of a 3-step “stackable” curriculum that provides 2 career studies certificates and a 61 credit-hour associate degree in Human Services. (For first step see Behavioral Health Technician CSC; for second steop see Human Services Technician CSC.)

Considerations for Selecting Degree The job outlook for Social and Human Service Assistants is bright and projected to grow much faster than average for all occupations from 2020-2030 ( www.bls.gov, 2022). Degree curriculum offers online and in-class courses. In-class courses are scheduled in the evening to accomodate working students
Considerations When Selecting Courses

There are 6 sequenced courses in the human services curriculum that have parts 1 & 2 (i.e., HMS 121; 122; HMS 141; 142; Men 101; 102). Students must enroll in part 1 of these courses, first

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and J Sargeant Reynolds Community College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses The 2-year AAS degree requires that students complete a capstone course, HMS 290, that requires placement in a program-approved social/human services community agency for completion of a 130 clock-hour internship
Doing More With Your Degree The Human Services AAS degree prepares students with the KSAs (i.e., knowledge, skills, abilities) and professional ethics and values to enter the workforce and/or transfer to partner colleges and universities. Various job titles include the following: Applied Behavior Analyst (ABA); Case Manager Assistant; Program Support Technician; Registered Behavior Technician (RBT); Direct Support Professional; Benefits Specialist; Community Life Activities Assistant
Program Successes & Highlights Through the program's internship requirement, students gain on-the-job-training they can put on their resumes. A highlight of the human services program is that it has awarded an internship stipend for 6-8 students each semester for the past 10+ years
