The Bachelor of Science (BS) degree program in Psychology emphasizes the learning of representative knowledge in content areas that constitute modern psychology, with particular concentration on psychology as a science. Students are exposed to a variety of subdisciplines in psychology including biological, developmental, cognitive, social, and clinical/counseling. The major is designed to provide course work relevant to students’ interests as well as to career and/or graduate study goals.

Outcomes

SLO 1: Students will be able to apply critical thinking and analytical skills to develop and conduct psychological research. SLO 2: Students will be able to test hypotheses and draw logical inferences using quantitative analysis. SLO 3: Students will be able to evaluate current and historical theory and concepts and critique research across the discipline.

Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree	Some Hollins psychology majors choose graduate school after completing their undergraduate education. Others are eager to immediately start their careers. Psychology majors can enter many fields after graduation and have gone on pursue fulfilling work in rehabilitation, family counseling, therapy with children, school psychology, community relations, research, human resources, advertising, TV, and other media.
Program Successes & Highlights	At Hollins University, psychology majors have a number of computers and laboratories dedicated to student research. Faculty laboratories are available for training, lab classes, and collaborative research. Psychology majors have the opportunity to present their research at Hollins’ annual Science Seminar, Virginia Psychological Association convention, and other national and regional professional conferences. They may also participate in colloquia series presented by other regional colleges and universities. Hollins students have continued with graduate school studies in medicine; psychiatry; experimental, school, social, and clinical psychology; social work; and physical therapy.

Associate Transfer Degree Completion	Completion of a qualifying VCCS associate degree program will guarantee completion of the general education component of the Hollins undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major.
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School	Students earning an associate degree while in high school are not eligible for guaranteed admission programs and must complete general education courses. All courses are evaluated and transferred as applicable to your degree.
Credit for Prior Learning	We accept AP and IB results for college credit if the score earned meets college expectations. Transfer credits will be considered for CLEP (College Level Examination Program) on an individual basis for examinations if Hollins offers a comparable course.
