The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies requires a minimum of 120 credits. Along with the general education requirements of VCU Life Sciences, this curriculum requires 32-33 credits in core science and mathematics courses and 37-38 credits in environmental studies core courses.

Outcomes

Upon completing this program, students will be able to demonstrate the following: Life sciences – Recall and transfer fundamental life science concepts (biology, ecology, evolution) to the conservation and management of natural resources Social sciences – Recall and transfer fundamental social science concepts (policy, economics, politics) to the conservation and management of natural resources Physical sciences – Recall and transfer fundamental physical science concepts (geology, climate, physics) to the conservation and management of natural resources Research skills (geospatial, quantitative and field) – Identify and implement the correct tools/skills to collect, visualize and analyze environmental data Synthesis (combinations of previous entries and communication) – Implement interdisciplinary problem solving by combining concepts and skills to address contemporary environmental challenges

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies requires a minimum 2.0 cumulative average in all major course work and a minimum of 34 credits of upper-level (e.g., 3XX, 4XX, or 5XX) approved courses. To meet the capstone requirement, students are required to complete ENVS 499 and an additional course as approved by the unit. This additional course credit will count toward the electives for this major.

Considerations When Selecting Courses

Focus on general education and foundational STEM courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics so that you can focus on Environmental Studies specific core and upper level electives at VCU.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year

Doing More With Your Degree Our field is highly interdisciplinary. Our students build connections with fields of urban studies and planning, biology, political science and the humanities. There are lots of ways to make your flavor of Environmental Studies reflect your career interests. We spend time early in the program providing our students with tools to understand how their education maps toward their career objectives.
Program Successes & Highlights We are a national leader in hands-on freshwater experiential education; our River Studies and Leadership Certificate program, administered in collaboration with the River Management Society, is the largest in the country. We are a leader in experiential field education. Through the courses aligned with our outdoor leadership certificate, our students know how to work and lead teams safely in various field settings. Our students have strong quantitative, geospatial, and problem-solving skills and the ability to move across Life, Earth, Climate, and policy fields.

Associate Transfer Degree Completion Students who earn an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Science, General Education Certificate, or Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System, Richard Bland College, or the College of Southern Maryland may be eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Admission Agreement. Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived.

Students who have earned a transfer-oriented associate degree from any regionally accredited institution or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System before enrolling at VCU will have their General Education requirements satisfied. The Associate of Science in Science or the Associate of Arts & Sciences in Science are the recommended associate degrees for this major.
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School Students who have earned a transfer-oriented associate degree from any regionally accredited institution or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System before enrolling at VCU will have their General Education requirements satisfied. The Associate of Science in Science or the Associate of Arts & Sciences in Science are the recommended associate degrees for this major.
Credit for Prior Learning VCU accepts a variety of types of credit for prior learning, including but not limited to Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), military experience, Cambridge, and industry certifications that are recommended for credit by the American Council on Education or the National College Credit Recommendation Service.

Some degree programs like Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Engineering have more competitive GPA requirements. Admission to programs in VCU Arts is also based on an evaluation of additional application materials and may be more competitive. Transfer applicants with fewer than 24 earned semester (36 quarter) hours will also be reviewed based on their high school GPA.
