Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | The Musical Theatre major provides professionally focused training within the context of a broader university experience. The intensive, hands-on curriculum includes coursework in acting, dance, voice, musical theatre performance and audition technique, theatre/musical theatre history and analysis, technical theatre, music theory, and piano. At the heart of the program is a core practice to encourage students to hone their skills as performers, while also providing them the opportunity to explore and expand their knowledge of all areas of collaborative theatre making, affording students the opportunity to form their own unique voices as creative artists prepared to succeed in the professional arena. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
You can complete an equivalent course to JMU's THEA 251 Basic Acting prior to transfer. Consider beginning a foreign language or an additional philosophy course for the JMU BA requirements. An audition is required for admission to the Musical Theatre major, students are encouraged to complete the audition in the semester prior to enrolling at JMU. (i.e., spring for a fall start, or fall for a spring start).
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
Doing More With Your Degree | It is possible to pursue a minor and to potentially double major alongside the Musical Theatre major at JMU. |
Program Successes & Highlights | Each year we produce multiple musicals and plays on the mainstage, student-produced full-length plays and musicals or devised work in the Studio Theatre, and staged readings of original student work in our Workshop season. We focus exclusively on undergraduate education, so you won’t be competing with graduate students for resources. School of Theatre and Dance students are socially active and engaged, frequent participants in various study abroad and service programs, professional performance work and internships, and are regular creators of independent projects, including films, performances, and events in and outside of the School of Theatre and Dance. |
