Ranked #8 in the country among college theatres by the Princeton Review 2021, Hollins Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program in Theatre encourages students to individualize their course of study inspired by their specific interests and talents. Students are encouraged to engage in every aspect of theatre, from fully-realized department productions to student-produced work. • Students can focus on one of three areas of theatre: acting/directing, design/technology, playwriting/dramaturgy, or choose a broader path embracing all aspects of the art form. • The theatre major is highly compatible with many other programs of study, and it is easy to double major. • Students can take advantage of internships, with companies from Tony Award winning professional theatres to grassroots experimental theatres. • A London theatre immersion program with links to Shakespeare’s Globe is open to juniors and seniors. By combining the individual creative process, the collaborative process, and the critical/analytical process, this program of study provides a solid foundation for those wishing to pursue most areas of theatre. A student who pursues a theatre major will be prepared for any environment or profession where creative problem solving, collaboration, research/analysis skills, hard work, and passion are valued.
Outcomes
SLO 1: Students will be able to organize three theatrical design elements (scenery, lights, and costumes) and translate them into practical technical application. SLO 2: Students will be able to identify and apply basic acting fundamentals including character and text analysis as well as foundational vocal and physical techniques. SLO 3: Students will articulate a personal theatrical aesthetic based on coursework and production experience.
