Students concentrate in theatre, musical theatre, or dance and study with a faculty of working professionals who give personal attention to every student. With a wide range of performance opportunities, one of the distinctive features of the School of Theatre and Dance is the emphasis it places on student generated work in the Experimental Theatre and Dance Studio productions.
Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | We offer a Bachelor of Arts degree with a rigorous curriculum that prepares students for a diverse range of career paths. A career in “Dance” is a wide spectrum, and we work with each student to help define and shape their individual path. Participation in dance ensembles is a core feature of the curriculum, and ensemble rehearsals often occur in the evenings. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Consider beginning a foreign language and/or taking an additional philosophy course to meet the JMU BA requirements. An audition is required for admission to the Dance major. Students are encouraged to audition the semester prior to when they intend to start at JMU (i.e.. fall for a spring start at JMU, spring for a fall start at JMU).
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
Doing More With Your Degree | It is possible to pursue a double major or minor alongside the Dance major, and many Dance majors choose to do so. |
Program Successes & Highlights | The intensive curriculum prepares dancers to create, perform, produce, analyze, and teach the art of dance (PK-12 licensure is available). Students have the opportunity to work with high-level professional faculty and guest artists and companies during the course of their time at JMU. Dance graduates of the past decade have gone on to work in places like Jacob's Pillow and Monica Bill Barnes & Co., attend top graduate programs, and pursue a wide range of careers both in and outside of dance. |
