Gender, Sexuality & Women's Studies (BA)
Bachelor of ArtsRandolph-Macon College
Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies examine the ways in which gender influences both lived experience and views of knowledge and reality. It is an interdisciplinary field that comprises many different perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. It prepares majors and minors for a world in which gender operates as a significant factor in both professional and private life.
The major prepares students for a wide range of academic and applied opportunities. Majors pursue graduate training in gender and interdisciplinary studies, as well as traditional disciplines.
Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon. Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies is an interdisciplinary course of study that identifies and interrogates the way gender and sexuality (along with race, class, ethnicity, and religion) have shaped, and continue to shape the world in which we live. Offerings from a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives–History, Religious Studies, Literature, Art History, and Sociology–examine the gendered nature of societies, warts and all, and invite students to problem-solve in addressing inequity and injustice. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
No specific courses required.
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | Gender, Sexuality, and Womeen's Studies (GSWS) is an interdisciplinary program that interrogates institutional formations of sex, gender, and sexualities and their mutual construction with other systems of power such as class, race, ability, and religion. Through feminist, intersectional, critical race, and queer theories and methodologies, students are exposed to a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives as they examine power, inequality, and social justice. |
Doing More With Your Degree | Graduates from our program are employed with companies such as Commonwealth Catholic Charities, Chester County of Human Services and Hanover Safe Place. Many of our majors also double major and utilize their GSWS degree in their respective fields. Alumni have continued their studies in graduate programs such as education, sociology, counseling, psychology, law, and theology. |
Program Successes & Highlights | While in the program, students have opportunities to conduct research in collaboration with a faculty member as well as gain internship experience. Students have participated in field studies and internships at Hanover Safe Place (domestic violence), Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, and the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy. Students have also published research. For example, Damon Reed published 'Hidden Degradations: The Unintentional Proliferation of Homosexual Stereotypes in Javier Fuentes-León's Undertow', (supervised by Patricia Reagan). Taylor Williams published 'Deeper Meaning to 'Homebrew': Analyzing the Position of the Ale-Wife in Early Modern Europe (1500-1800)' (supervised by Michael Fischbach). |
