The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Life Science Engineering, and includes a chemical engineering concentration and a life science engineering concentration. Each student must choose the desired concentration upon initial registration. As part of the B.S. degree in chemical and life science engineering, all students complete an approved internship or cooperative education experience.
Outcomes

Considerations for Selecting Degree | Students with an interest in one or more of the following should consider chemical/life science engineering a top choice of major: stem cell and stem cell-derived tissue engineering, biosciences/biotechnology, cellular engineering, biochips and biosensors, bioinformatics and molecular biocomputing, genetic and protein molecular engineering, environmental life science engineering, and molecular- and cellular-based therapeutics. In addition, students should expect to be involved in hands-on learning each semester, with core labs associated with their major courses. Students are also required to complete an intensive senior design project and choose from a list of high-level STEM courses in order to satisfy the technical/engineering elective requirements. |
Program Requirement Notes | Program Requirement Notes Students must receive a grade of C in all engineering courses in order to graduate. Minimum grades of C in CLSE 115, CLSE 201 and CLSE 202 are required before students may take additional CLSE courses. After passing CLSE 202 with a minimum grade of C, students are allowed to continue with one D grade in any CLSE course. They must retake that course in order to graduate, but may continue taking other CLSE courses. Students are not allowed to continue with two grades of D in CLSE courses and must successfully retake at least one of those courses with a minimum grade of C to take additional 300- and 400-level CLSE courses. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Transfer students planning on majoring in chemical/life science engineering must complete Calculus I and General Chemsitry I with lab, and preferably University Physics I, with grades of A or B and a minimum GPA of 2.5 for immediate admission. Students can also take a combination of the following (Calculus II, Differential Equations, University Physics II, General Chemistry II, VCCS courses- EGR 206, EGR 124, EGR 125), and students who complete an AS degree and/or an AS degree with an engineering specialization can expect to receive credit for most courses for earned grades of C or above.

Doing More With Your Degree | Chemical engineering and life science engineering share a broad range of common foundational knowledge bases, including the principles of mass and energy balances, transport phenomena and thermodynamics, surface and interfacial science, and reaction science and engineering. Strong academic and research programs in chemical and life science engineering will provide a wealth of exciting professional opportunities for successful graduates of the VCU program. CLSE students choose between an concentration in chemical or life science engineering, have the opportunity to earn a double major in chemistry, and as well if accepted can take part in the BS-MS program in one additional year after achieving a BS degree. |
Program Successes & Highlights | Students who complete their chemical/life science engineering degree can find successful careers in industry areas such as development of chemicals, biochemical and biologics in a variety of applications including polymers, nanomaterials, pharmaceuticals, clean fuels, environmental protection and medicine, with companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, DuPont, Suez, Proctor and Gamble, Deloitte, Merch, ChemTreat, and more. Students who excel academically, complete an internship or Co-op, get involved in undergraduate research, and join an engineering-based student organization can expect to be hired at or before their graduation or soon thereafter. |

Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Students who earn an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Science, General Education Certificate, or Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System, Richard Bland College, or the College of Southern Maryland may be eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Admission Agreement. Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived.
