Biomedical engineering applies engineering expertise to analyze and solve problems in biology and medicine in order to enhance health care. Students involved in biomedical engineering learn to work with living systems and to apply advanced technology to the complex problems of medical care. Biomedical engineers work with other health care professionals including physicians, nurses, therapists and technicians toward improvements in diagnostic, therapeutic and health delivery systems. Biomedical engineers may be involved with designing medical instruments and devices, developing medical software, tissue and cellular engineering, developing new procedures or conducting state-of-the-art research needed to solve clinical problems.
Outcomes

Considerations for Selecting Degree | Students with an interest in one or more of the following should consider biomedical engineering a top choice of major- biomedical instrumentation and/or devices, biomaterials, bioinformatics, cellular, tissue, and regenerative medicines, biomechanics and rehabilitative engineering, and/or a pathway to various medical degrees. In addition, students should expect to be involved in hands-on learning each semester, with core labs associated with their major courses. Students are also required to complete an intensive senior design project and choose from a list of high-level STEM courses in order to satisfy the technical/engineering elective requirements. |

Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Transfer students planning on majoring in biomedical engineering must complete Calculus I and General Chemistry I with lab, and preferably University Physics I, with grades of A or B and a minimum GPA of 2.5 for immediate admission. Students can also take a combination of (Calculus II, Differential Equations, University Physics II, VCCS courses- EGR 121-122, EGR 206, EGR 123-124), and students who complete an AS degree and/or an AS degree with an engineering specialization can expect to receive credit for most courses for earned grades of C or above.

Program Successes & Highlights | Biomedical engineering provides in-depth study in a variety of specialization areas including biomedical imaging systems, orthopedic biomechanics, tissue and cellular engineering, biomaterials, artificial organs, human-computer interfaces, cardiovascular devices, rehabilitation and human factors engineering. The programs allow students to participate in cutting-edge research in one of the nation’s most advanced engineering facilities. The department has ongoing collaborations with numerous industries, federal laboratories, the VCU science departments, the university’s MCV Campus, the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center, the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park and numerous biomedical and clinical programs throughout the VCU Medical Center’s MCV Hospitals. |

Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Students who earn an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Science, General Education Certificate, or Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System, Richard Bland College, or the College of Southern Maryland may be eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Admission Agreement. Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived. Students who have earned a transfer-oriented associate degree from any regionally accredited institution or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System before enrolling at VCU will have their General Education requirements satisfied. The Associate of Science in Engineering is recommended for this major. |
