Program Overview & Guidance

Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
---|---|
Considerations for Selecting Degree | The program is available online and requires an internship and research course in the senior year. The internship is with approved healthcare organizations through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Norfolk State University and the healthcare organization. |
Considerations When Selecting Courses |
As part of the curriculum, students must complete 40 credits of general education courses. HSM 300-Health Services Management is the first course in a sequence of health services management courses in the curriculum. HSM 300 must be completed successfully before attempting the other HSM courses. With the exception of the epidemiology course and research course (HSM 470 and HSM 497), students must complete all courses in the curriculum before taking the internship course (HSM 494).
|
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | The program curriculum consists of business courses such as finance, accounting, and economics, as well as math related courses, including college algebra and statistics. Students must earn grades of C or higher in the aforementioned courses. |
Doing More With Your Degree | Students have the opportunity to earn a B.S. in HSM with a Concentration in Food Science and Nutrition (FSN). The FSN Concentration is accredited by Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND@eatright.org). The courses in the FSN Concentration are taught by doctorate and master's prepared Dietitians. Students who are interested in pursuing the FSN Concentration must complete all prerequisite courses in the curriculum before they can apply to enter the FSN Concentration. The Department of Nursing and Allied Health offers a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) Online. The HSM degree program could be used as a pipeline to recruit students in the MHA program. |
Program Successes & Highlights | The HSM degree program is a member of the Association of University Programs (AUPHA). The Association is comprised of colleges, universities, faculty, individuals and organizations. AUPHA is committed to improving the delivery of healthcare services (https://network.aupha.org/members/findaprogram). All faculty members who teach online are Certified Online Instructors and have many years of experience in teaching online courses in institutions of higher learning. The majority of the faculty members have experiences working in the healthcare industry and have terminal degrees in the health science discipline. In 2021, Study.com published its rankings for best bachelor's degree programs in Healthcare Management. Norfolk State University's degree program was included as one of the best.
