Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree Students have the opportunity to earn a B.S. in HSM with a Concentration in Food Science and Nutrition (FSN). The FSN Concentration is accredited by Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND@eatright.org). The courses in the FSN Concentration are taught by doctorate and master's prepared Dietitians. Students who are interested in pursuing the FSN Concentration must complete all prerequisite courses in the curriculum before they can apply to enter the FSN Concentration. The Department of Nursing and Allied Health offers a Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) Online. The HSM degree program could be used as a pipeline to recruit students in the MHA program.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

As part of the curriculum, students must complete 40 credits of general education courses. HSM 300-Health Services Management is the first course in a sequence of health services management courses in the curriculum. HSM 300 must be completed successfully before attempting the other HSM courses. With the exception of the epidemiology course and research course (HSM 470 and HSM 497), students must complete all courses in the curriculum before taking the internship course (HSM 494).

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Norfolk State University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses The HSM/FSN Concentration is not a free standing degree. Students earn their degree in HSM and the Concentration appears on the transcript. The program curriculum consists of business courses such as finance, accounting, and economics, as well as math related courses, including college algebra and statistics. Students must earn grades of C or higher in the aforementioned courses.

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Completion of the general education certificate or a transfer-oriented associate degree program will guarantee completion of the University Core general education component of the NSU undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major.

Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School Students earning an associate degree while in high school are not eligible for guaranteed admission programs and must complete 3 college-specific general education courses. All courses are evaluated and trasnferred as applicable to your degree.
Credit for Prior Learning We accept AP, IB, and CLEP results for college credit if the score earned meets college expectations.
Did You Know That...
  • Completing your Associate transfer degree post-high school satisfies all lower division general education requirements and increases the chance of completing your bachelor's degree?
  • Exceeding 3 years or 90 credits at your community college means you may have exhausted your financial aid at that college and have limited your future financial aid at: Norfolk State University
