Considerations for Selecting Degree The bulk of the Software Engineering major is made up of computer science and software engineering courses but students are also required to complete a calculus track through calculus II, probability and statistics and an additional upper level math course. Other courses include cybersecurity, robotics and artificial intelligence, computer networking, web technologies, software design, and project management. They work on team projects throughout their time at Wise, undertaking a major team project during their senior year.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Pre-calculus I and II are recommended to prepare you for higher level math courses.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and The University of Virginia's College at Wise within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses Students interested in the math, computer science and software engineering are encouraged to pursue the pre-calculus/calculus track to prepare for courses in the major.
Doing More With Your Degree Students majoring in Software Engineering have high rates of employment at typically higher pay than other programs in careers as data analysts, computer scientists, software engineers, cybersecurity analysts, dev ops engineers, web developers, GIS technicians, etc. Many of our students are placed and offered positions prior to graduation.
Program Successes & Highlights ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited preparing students for entry into the global workforce. Curriculum designed to meet the standards of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
