The Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies is an interdisciplinary degree that provides students with knowledge of human cultures and intellectual and practical skills to engage complexity, diversity and change. The degree program fosters students’ personal and social responsibility and, through applied learning experiences, empowers students to negotiate and to solve the complex problems of the 21st century. African American studies majors often pursue graduate and professional degree programs in business, education, history, international relations, law, political science, psychology, public health and social work. Career opportunities with a B.A. only in African American Studies include employment in community health agencies, public and private schools and nonprofit organizations.
Outcomes
Upon completing this program, students will know and know how to do the following: Demonstrate knowledge of the major concepts, perspectives and theories in Africana studies Articulate the manner in which institutional structures and systemic practices shape and affect the experiences of Black people in the United States and abroad Demonstrate knowledge of basic methodological approaches (both quantitative and qualitative) in Africana studies and the general role of methodology in building knowledge about the Black experience Critically engage and propose integrity-based solutions to problems that impact persons of African descent and their communities Apply the disciplinary knowledge of Africana studies to address critical issues in the field of public administration

| Considerations for Selecting Degree | This degree is interdisciplinary in that it provides students with knowledge of human cultures and the intellectual and practical skills to engage a complex, diverse and evolving world. Students are required to complete an internship and will learn how to conduct independent research via the Capstone course. |
| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Complete the Associate of Arts & Sciences or Associate of Science in General Studies or Social Science to best prepare for this degree. Course Recommendations: Complete any remaining General Education requirements for the College of Humanities and Sciences. We strongly encourage students interested in majoring in AFAM to take the following General Education courses: AFAM 111, SOC 101, PSY 101 and ENG 215 or 250, as these courses are prerequisites for some of our upper level AFAM courses.

| Doing More With Your Degree | African American Studies majors can select one of five concentrations: artistic, historical, and literacy perspectives; education; political, religious, and societal perspectives; public administration; and social and behavioral sciences. In addition, African American Studies majors have the option of pursuing the accelerated B.A. to M.P.A. program. This concentration allows African American Studies majors to pursue their B.A. degree and a Master's in Public Administration in a minimum of five years. |
| Program Successes & Highlights | AFAM is one of the smaller departments at VCU with an average of forty to forty-five majors and nine faculty members. This creates an intimate learning environment, where students have the opportunity to build strong relationships with faculty and staff. Because the AFAM major is a 30-credit major, it is very easy for our students to double major in other departments. AFAM pairs well with majors such as Psychology, Political Science and Biology and gives students who may be interested in pursuing careers in politics or the health care field a unique opportunity to "specialize" in serving particular populations. |

| Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Students who earn an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Science, General Education Certificate, or Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System, Richard Bland College, or the College of Southern Maryland may be eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Admission Agreement. Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived. Students who have earned a transfer-oriented associate degree from any regionally accredited institution or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System before enrolling at VCU will have their General Education requirements satisfied. |

Some degree programs like Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Engineering have more competitive GPA requirements. Admission to programs in VCU Arts is also based on an evaluation of additional application materials and may be more competitive. Transfer applicants with fewer than 24 earned semester (36 quarter) hours will also be reviewed based on their high school GPA.
