Bachelor of Arts in Comprehensive Liberal Studies

Bachelor of Arts
Batten University

The Comprehensive Liberal Studies major (CLS) offers students the opportunity to design an individual program of study that reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the liberal arts. Unlike the departmental majors, this major allows students to create a unique major that integrates studies in all four academic schools of the University in a coherent program with a clear intellectual focus. The major consists of 44 semester hours chosen from courses in four academic schools of the student’s choosing. Please note that whichever of the four schools the student chooses to use for their contract, they must include a Lab Science Course.

Outcomes

Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree Each student’s program must adhere to the following guidelines: Sixteen semester hours must be taken in each of two academic schools, while 12 semester hours must be taken in a third academic school. At least 24 of the 44 total semester hours in the major must be taken at the 300/400 level. These 24 upper-level semester hours must be distributed across at least two academic schools. No more than half of the semester hours from courses in any one school may be taken in the same department or discipline. One interdisciplinary course designated INST may be included in the major and counted either as a humanities or social sciences course. An INST course may not be counted in the major as a natural sciences and mathematics course. At least one laboratory science course must be included as part of the major. A 2.5 grade point average in all courses included in the CLS is required for graduation.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Comprehensive Liberal Studies is for students whose interests don't fit neatly into a single department. Rather than choosing from a fixed course list, CLS students design their own 44-hour program of study spanning three of the university's four academic schools, built around a clear intellectual theme they define themselves. The major is governed by a formal contract negotiated with a faculty advisor and approved by the CLS Director — outlining the specific courses planned, the student's academic goals, and how the program satisfies oral communication and computer proficiency requirements. In the final semester, students write a reflective essay revisiting the goals laid out in their original declaration and exploring how those goals were realized over the course of the major. Because the major is self-designed, it rewards students with a clear sense of purpose — whether that's a specific career goal, a research interest spanning multiple disciplines, or a course of study no single department offers on its own.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Batten University within your first year
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses CLS is a contract major: there is no fixed course list. Students design an individualized 44-hour program across three academic schools, in consultation with a faculty advisor and the CLS Director. The contract must include a course list, a declaration essay articulating the major's unifying theme, and a statement showing how oral communication and computer proficiency requirements will be met. The contract is approved by both the advisor and the CLS Director, and may be renegotiated if listed courses become unavailable. A reflective essay reviewing the major's goals and themes is required in the final semester, along with the final written project from the WES 300 seminar (whether or not WES 300 counts toward the major) for assessment purposes.
