Students will gain research experience in their senior year. Students also obtain real-life experiences by completing a hospital-based practicum covering all aspects of dietetics practice.
Program Overview & Guidance

| Program Guidance Element | What You Need to Know |
|---|---|
| Considerations for Selecting Degree | This degree includes extensive experiential learning including community service learning, clinical field experience, and food service management and food science labs. There is a 3-credit summer field experience required during the summer before senior year. The course is offered online and there is a 100-hour requirement to be on-site in a student-selected hospital setting. Students pursuing the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential are prepared with the degree for graduate education. |
| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Complete equivalents to the Dietetics program prerequisite courses with a grade of C or higher to apply to the program. Carefully plan completion of Chemistry and Physiology prerequisites to not delay admission to the program. Foundations of Nutrition Practice (NUTR 295) must be taken at JMU and does not need to be completed prior to admission to the program.
|
| Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses | |
| Doing More With Your Degree | Upon graduation, students are eligible to take the Registration Examination for Dietetic Technicians to be credentialed as a Nutrition and Dietetic Technician, Registered. Students also earn a verification statement based on the program's accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. The verification statement allows for eligibility to apply to post-graduate dietetic internships and coordinated supervised practice programs for those pursuing the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential. |
| Program Successes & Highlights | Over 90% of Dietetics majors secure admission to a post-graduate dietetic internship or graduate program during their final semester, which is necessary to earn the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist credential. Recent graduates have attended dietetics internships such as Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, and all Virginia internship programs. Based on a recent survey of alumni, all agreed or strongly agreed that they were well-prepared for their post-graduate programs. |
