The Bachelor of Science in Therapeutic Recreation degree is an accredited program of the Council on Accreditation of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism (COAPRT). The program exists within the framework to utilize recreation activities and other active treatment modalities, to increase the functional abilities and quality of life of people of all ages with disabilities and illness. This preparation places priority on the development of skills through applied learning experiences and community involvement. Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the national certification exam and credentialed to work in the field. Longwood's nationally recognized Therapeutic Recreation program provides students with a comprehensive foundation of: liberal arts, biological and health sciences, social sciences, disability studies and leisure theory. The technical aspects of the Therapeutic Recreation profession are taught within specialty courses emphasizing professional and therapeutic communication, program planning, intervention techniques, clinical assessment and documentation, clinical reasoning, management and research. Upon graduation, students become eligible to sit for the national certification examination through the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). The processes for application are the responsibility of the graduate, and the university cannot enter into the process.

| Considerations When Selecting Courses |
To ensure timely graduation, complete Anatomy and Physiology I, Introduction to Psychology, Life-Span Development Psychology, and Psychopathology. In addition, Medical Terminology and related electives that transfer to Longwood can expedite graduation. Completing these courses allow you to transfer to Longwood and finish the Therapeutic Recreation degree in 2 or 2.5 years.

What If I Have An Associate Degree Or Credit For Prior Learning?

| Associate Transfer Degree Completion | If you earn a transfer-oriented associate's degree (Associate of Arts and/or Science) from one of the Virginia community colleges or Richard Bland College and you are admitted to Longwood, you are guaranteed completion of all Foundation-level courses as well as the Integrating World Languages Perspectives-level course associated with Civitae (Longwood’s core curriculum program). |
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School | High school students who have earned an associate's degree concurrent with high school graduation are not eligible for guaranteed admission. Such students are considered freshman applicants with transfer credit. Those students completing transfer associate's degrees, upon receipt of official transcript demonstrating completion of the GAA requirements, will be awarded a waiver for lower-level Longwood University Civitae Core courses, with the exception of enrolling in ENGL 265, The Writing and Rhetoric of Citizenship. |
