Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree Biology provides great opportunities for hands-on interaction in the lab and field, and for collaboration with classmates and professors. This is an in-person program, with classes offered during weekdays during the regular semester. Summer and winter terms are great opportunities for internships and student research projects.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Many lower-level courses are required as prerequisites for later courses, so it’s important to start science and math requirements early and stay on sequence. For instance, Calculus is a prerequisite or corequisite for Physics, Organic Chemistry is a prerequisite for Microbiology and Biochemistry, etc., so it’s important to take Biology, Chemistry, and Math from the start of your degree.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Emory & Henry University within your first year
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses BS Biology students complete an independent research project mentored by department professors. All biology students are required to pass an oral exam their senior year. Our upper level biology courses prepare them for it, and it provides good professional preparation for future interviews or graduate school exams.
Doing More With Your Degree Biology offers great opportunities for mentored research projects, internships, and community engagement. Students go on from a Biology major to a wide range of professions, including academic research, industry jobs, teaching, work with conservation agencies, biotech start-up companies, and health professions including medicine, physician assistant, dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, pharmacy, and more.
Program Successes & Highlights Biology students have the chance to stand out for their independent projects. Our students have co-authored research papers and presented at regional scientific conferences. In addition, your Biology degree can take you far - geographically. Biology offers a study-abroad trip to Panama, and a number of our students have gone on to graduate school or jobs in places ranging from England and France to China and Japan.

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Completion of the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program will guarantee completion of the 'Think, Understand & Create' liberal arts core component of the E&H undergraduate curriculum but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites needed for the major. Other elements of the core curriculum may need to be met if not taken as part of the AA/AS degree. Students will be required to complete CORE 200 and CORE 300 at E&H. Students completing at least 56 credits following high school graduation but before transferring to E&H are exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, and Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship.

Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School Only students who have completed college credit elsewhere following high school graduation will be exempt from the Core Curriculum requirement. Completion of courses that satisfy elements of the Care & Cultural Competency and Think, Understand & Create elements of the curriculum will be awarded equivalent credit with an earned grade of C or better. Students completing the Uniform Certificate of General Studies or an AA/AS degree program concurrently with their high school diploma will not be exempt from CORE 100, CORE 103, or Emory Abroad/Global Citizenship.
Credit for Prior Learning Emory & Henry awards credit for AP, IB, and CLEP. Please see the credit equivalency charts to determine the needed scores for course credit. Currently, we do not award academic credit for industry or military training.
Did You Know That...
  • Completing your Associate transfer degree post-high school satisfies all lower division general education requirements and increases the chance of completing your bachelor's degree?
  • Exceeding 3 years or 90 credits at your community college means you may have exhausted your financial aid at that college and have limited your future financial aid at: Emory & Henry University
