The B.S., Nursing program has three pathways to degree: traditional, accelerated B.S., and R.N.-B.S. The traditional B.S. and accelerated B.S. are both offered in-person and are for those seeking an R.N. license. The R.N. to B.S. completion is offered entirely online and is for licensed R.N.s seeking to complete their bachelor's degree.

Is This Degree Right For Me?

Traditional Program: This is a hands-on program that allows our students to complete 500 clinical hours in agencies across the greater Richmond area. It is also a rigorous program, so students can expect to be spending around 40 hours per week in the classroom, in clinicals, and/or completing coursework.

RN-BS Co-enrollment: This program is a great fit for associate-level nursing students who are interested in furthering their education to receive their Bachelors degree in Nursing. Our program is online and part-time to accommodate they busy schedules of a working nurse.

RN-BS General: This program is a great fit for working registered nurses who are interested in furthering their education to receive their Bachelors degree in Nursing. Our program is online and part-time to accommodate they busy schedules of a working nurse.

What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses

Traditional Program: It is important to be aware of the prerequisite courses needed to begin the program. While these courses do not need to be completed when applying to our program, they do need to be completed before starting our program. Failure to complete these pre-requisite courses would result in a student being unable to start our program.

For Co-enrollment RN-BS with John Tyler Community College (JTCC), Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC), Rappahannock Community College (RCC) and Reynolds Community College (JSRCC): It is important to be aware of the prerequisite courses needed to begin the program. While these courses do not need to be completed when applying to our program, they do need to be completed before starting out program. Failure to complete these pre-requisite courses would result in a student being unable to start our program. It is likely that many of these courses for an Associates degree, but it is important to double check!

For General RN-BS: It is important to be aware of the prerequisite courses needed to begin the program. While these courses do not need to be completed when applying to our program, they do need to be completed before starting out program.   • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Virginia Commonwealth University within your first year via College Connect
Are there other program requirements beyond specific courses? The VCU School of Nursing offers three undergraduate programs: the Traditional Nursing program, the Accelerated Nursing program, and the RN-BS Completion program.

The Traditional Nursing program is a full-time program for first and second bachelor's degree-seekers who do not yet hold an RN license. The Accelerated Nursing program is a full-time program for bachelor's degree-holders who do not yet have an RN license. The RN-BS program is a part-time program for associate's or diploma-prepared RNs seeking to complete their bachelor's degree in Nursing.

Each program has a specific set of a prerequisites or recommended courses.

Do More With Your Degree Traditional Program: A valuable opportunity that the School of Nursing provides to its students is the opportunity to be a Leadership or Research fellow through the Langston Center for Innovation in Quality and Safety. Fellows share and engage in track-specific learning experiences, mentorship, and community service to advance their development.

Traditional Program: Our undergraduate nursing program is ranked in the top 4% of undergraduate nursing programs in the country. Not only that, but on average 93% of our students pass the NCLEX on their first try. Our graduates also have a 100% placement rate, many even before they graduate.

RN-BS Co-enrollment: Our undergraduate nursing program is ranked in the top 4% of undergraduate nursing programs in the country. We also have a generous scholarship fund that awards co-enrollment students up to $10,000 to cover their tuition costs!

RN-BS General: Our undergraduate nursing program is ranked in the top 4% of undergraduate nursing programs in the country!

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Students who earn an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, Associate of Science, General Education Certificate, or Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System or Richard Bland College may be eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Admission Agreement. Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived.

Students who have earned a bachelor's degree, Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, or Associate of Science degree or the General Education Certificate before enrolling at VCU will have their General Education requirements waived.
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School Students who have earned an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, or Associate of Science degree or the General Education Certificate before enrolling at VCU will have their General Education requirements waived.

Some degree programs like Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Engineering have more competitive GPA requirements. Admission to programs in VCU Arts is also based on an evaluation of additional application materials and may be more competitive. Transfer applicants with fewer than 30 earned semester hours will also be reviewed based on their high school GPA.
