Spanish (BA)

Bachelor of Arts
Randolph-Macon College

In its full range of courses, the Spanish section of the Modern Languages Department seeks to develop student proficiency in four areas:

  • listening,
  • speaking,
  • reading, and
  • writing.

Courses at all levels are designed to provide continued opportunities for use of the language in a variety of modes and settings, on campus, in the Ashland and Richmond communities, and abroad. In addition to imparting linguistic skills, the Spanish section of the Modern Languages Department nurtures critical thinking and synthesis in a program balancing language, civilization and culture, literary and linguistic skills, and professional skills. The Spanish faculty believes that a multifaceted study of another language and culture sensitizes students to realities other than their own, permits them to become less ethnocentric and more understanding of cultural differences, while also developing an appreciation for people of other cultures.

The department encourages students to learn more about the language and cultures through a study abroad experience. The Office of International Education offers a number of study abroad opportunities, and Spanish faculty members offer occasional January Term travel courses. In addition, through its affiliation with ISEP, the college has exchange programs with several universities in the Hispanic world.

The prerequisites for all 300-level courses are one Spanish grammar course and one Spanish reading course.

The prerequisites for the Capstone Seminar course are at least two courses at the 300-level in Spanish and junior standing.

Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree The Spanish program at R-MC offers a wide variety of classes, from Spanish for the Professions to courses focused on literature, culture, linguistics, and Latino/Hispanic immigration to the United States. The Spanish major and minor will give you the depth and breadth of language and cultural exposure you need to feel at ease in a variety of professional fields as well as communicating with native speakers. Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish Honors Society) Phi Beta Kappa Spanish Club Hispanic Heritage Club First, having a working command of the Spanish language in the U.S today is crucial given the rapid increase of the Hispanic population in our country. Achieving proficiency in a second language opens you to wide range of possibilities: study abroad opens the mind of many students, gives them a new perspective on the world and how others see the world. This is a valuable skill to acquire when thinking of cultural competence in healthcare and business. Our education graduates help bring this to younger students in Spanish in middle and high schools. Pursuing a wide career of professions including a variety of business fields, bilingual education, law enforcement and medicine, among others, their language skills help our graduates serve diverse sectors of the population and give them a key advantage in competitive fields in which bilingualism is increasingly seen not just as an asset, but as a necessity. The R-MC Spanish Department has awarded the Global Seal of Biliteracy to 36 students since 2020. 26 students earned the credential of “Functional Fluency” (Intermediate Mid or Higher on all ACTFL skills test in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening) while 10 students were awarded “Working Fluency” (Advanced Low or Higher on all ACTFL skills test in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening). “The Global Seal of Biliteracy™ is a credential that celebrates language skills and expands future opportunities for its recipients. A uniform standard is used to empower our awardees to be a valuable asset in multilingual environments. We are committed to providing access to language certification to anyone that can demonstrate their bilingualism via testing. The Global Seal of Biliteracy enables recipients to showcase their language skills to any school or employer across state lines and national borders, with a unique serial-numbered document.” (https://theglobalseal.com) Please note: Students enrolled at Randolph-Macon College attend classes primarily Monday-Friday between 8 am - 5 pm with very few evening courses. The large majority of RMC coursework is offered in-person and on campus. A very limited selection of online courses is offered in summer sessions. No more than one half of the courses on a major or minor can be transferred; at least one-half of the semester hours of the major or minor must be taken at Randolph-Macon.
