Fashion Design (BA)

The fashion design major prepares students for assistant designer and pattern/drafting/tailoring specialist positions in the fashion industry as well as positions in apparel manufacturing and product development and merchandising and buying opportunities in the garment industry. Students in fashion design participate in an annual juried fashion show, Portfolio in Motion, featuring garments they have designed and constructed. The program culminates in a noted designer's professional evaluation of the student's original designs. Opportunities to cultivate professional skills are developed through participation in the Marymount Fashion Club and the Pattern Makers Club; affiliations with the Fashion Group International of Greater Washington, DC, Inc.

Considerations for Selecting Degree Marymount Fashion Design students are prepared to enter the industry to work for apparel manufacturers and for apparel retailers in the area of product development. The curriculum combines design thinking with expertise in textiles, quality standards, pattern making, illustration, and garment construction. MU students regularly compete in – and win – national and international design competitions.

Associate Transfer Degree Completion Completion of a transfer-oriented associates degree program will fulfill the majority of the university's Liberal Arts Core (general education) requirements but may not fulfill specific departmental requirements or prerequisites for the major. Students will be required to complete a designated theology course at Marymount. Marymount also accepts the UCGS and Passport programs to meet Liberal Arts Core requirements.
