The Medical Assisting certificate program (Plan Code 166) prepares individuals as multi-skilled health care practitioners who are competent in urgent care, physician’s offices, hospitals, and long term care environments. Graduates will be prepared to perform traditional medical assistant responsibilities to include clinical and administrative duties. Clinical functions could include, but are not limited to, direct patient care and preparation, ECG, phlebotomy, and pharmacology. Administrative duties include scheduling appointments, maintaining patient records, bookkeeping, and billing and insurance processing. (NCCT, 2017). Upon completion of the program students are eligible to take the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) for certification as a Medical Assistant (NCMA).
Outcomes
Students will be able to: Apply diagnostic testing skills. Apply the principles of law and ethics in performing office operations. Apply medical terminology in the workplace appropriately.

Program Requirement Notes | Program Requirement Notes The program will enroll approximately twenty (20) students annually so only selected applicants fulfilling the following prerequisite requirements will be admitted. Prospective students must: Complete application to ESCC High School Diploma or GED, copy to accompany application to program GPA of 2.0 or better IF GPA less than 2.0 or have been out of school more than 5 years, recommend English EDE10; math recommendation of MDE 10 Completion of Criminal Background, drug screening Completion of Physical examination with PPD or chest x-ray Current record of immunizations including MMR, Varicella, Tetanus, Hepatitis B and COVID vaccinations Grade of “C” or better in all curriculum courses. |

Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Students must earn 25% of their credits at ESCC for an Associate degree from our institution. Students who transfer to ESCC with a completed Associate degree will be awarded SDV 100 and will have their transcript evaluated for other course transfer. Students who transfer to ESCC with a completed Bachelor degree from a U.S. college or university will be awarded SDV 100, ENG 111 and ENG 112. The transcript will be evaluated for other course transfer. |
Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School | ESCC does not distinguish between students earning an associate degree concurrently, while in high school, or after high school graduation. |
