Nursing: RN to BSN Degree Completion BSN

Longwood University

The RN to BSN program provides a unique, flexible, cohort approach to learning for non-traditional students who have graduated from accredited associate degree programs and are licensed as Registered Nurses. This innovative online nursing curriculum is offered as 7-week blocked courses whereby students can choose a part-time track of 1 course each block or a full-time track of 2 courses per block. The program provides a foundation for professional nursing practice and will equip students for further learning opportunities in graduate study and advance practice. Upon admission to the program, all appropriate community college courses with a C or better will be accepted for transfer into Longwood University. Additional general education courses will be required in order to complete the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. These courses can be taken either at Longwood University or any regionally accredited institution.

Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Is This Degree Right For Me? Longwood University’s RN-BSN program is offered completely online. Classes are offered in 7 week blocks to allow students more flexibility with their scheduling. Faculty are understanding of the need for students to have a good work-family-school life balance and work to ensure flexibility within the classroom. The program is designed to build upon the skills and knowledge you have obtained in your Associate Degree or Diploma programs with an emphasis on evidence based practice.
What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses

Your Associate Degree or Diploma program will match very well with Longwood University’s RN-BSN program. Courses that are required for the program that can be taken at the community college include MTH 241 or MTH 245 (Statistics), BIO 150 (Microbiology), PSYCH 230 (Developmental Psychology), REL 242/230, and PHIL 220/227 or 229 (Biomedical Ethics). Students will also complete an Aesthetic Expression pillar course and may choose from courses in English, Art or Theater.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year

Are there other program requirements beyond specific courses?
Do More With Your Degree While at Longwood, students may choose to minor in other areas of interest. These may include but are not limited to Psychology, Health Education or Biology. Students will complete up to 8 hours of community health clinical in the Summer as part of NURS 464 Population Focused Community Health. Students are encouraged to focus on health disparities in their home community.
Program Successes & Highlights Students are able to complete their BSN in as short as three semesters completely online. Courses are offered in 7 week blocks. Students have all of the campus benefits of being a Longwood Lancer and are encouraged to come to campus to participate in events, use resources and get to know nursing faculty. Faculty are actively engaged with students in and outside of the online classroom. Faculty understand the challenges of trying to balance work, family and school.

Associate Transfer Degree Completion If you earn a transfer-oriented associate's degree (Associate of Arts and/or Science) from one of the Virginia community colleges or Richard Bland College and you are admitted to Longwood, you are guaranteed completion of all Foundation-level courses as well as the Integrating World Languages Perspectives-level course associated with Civitae (Longwood’s core curriculum program).

Is This College Right For Me?

Longwood is a mid-sized university where students enjoy the highest percentage of classes taught by full-time professors in Virginia and a residential academic community that offers students the full university experience. Class sizes are smaller than average--our Civitae Core Curriculum classes are capped at 25 students--throughout our more than 100 majors, minors, and concentrations. With seven on-campus residence halls and two university-managed apartment complexes, students live, learn, and grow together in a true community.

Opportunities for students to be involved are the hallmark of the Longwood experience. From service organizations and Greek life to club sports and a long list of clubs based on interests and activities, there is something for everyone at Longwood. Each semester, an involvement fair helps students find organizations that are the right fit for them to make their time at Longwood even more meaningful.

Transfer Student Catalog Year Transfer students may choose the catalog in effect at the time they enroll or the one that applies to continuous full-time students at their class level. 
First Year Student Catalog Year New students join the catalog year in effect during their first matriculating semester.
Applying for Guaranteed Admissions Students transferring from an institution with a transfer agreement are guaranteed admission to Longwood when they have finished their transfer-oriented associate's degree (Associate of Arts and/or Science) and earned a 2.5 cumulative GPA. Students who are admitted prior to earning the transfer-oriented associate's degree (Associate of Arts and/or Science) and complete the degree before enrolling at Longwood also will receive the articulation benefits upon submission of an official transcript.
