Program Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Considerations for Selecting Degree Longwood’s interdisciplinary degree program offers a fully in-person, face-to-face learning experience for students seeking an Elementary Education (PK-6) or Elementary (PK-6) and Middle School Education (6-8) teaching license. Upon acceptance into Longwood’s Teacher Preparation Program, transfer students typically take 4-5 semesters to complete their degree. First, students complete the final Content Courses required for degree and licensure, which include upper level Content Courses in math, English, kinesiology, and fine arts. These courses are taught by content professors across campus, and build on knowledge gained from the introductory Content Courses to provide a Liberal Arts-focused educational experience. Secondly, students select and complete a variety of Core Curriculum Courses specific to Longwood’s Mission that are designed to equip students to become citizen leaders in their own disciplines and communities. Finally, students complete Professional Education Courses taught by education faculty, which focus on assessment, literacy, content area methods, behavior management, and pedagogy. Students complete two practicum-embedded field experiences which allow them to put their learning and content knowledge into practice under the direction and supervision of their education professors. The final semester is the student teaching experience, in which students work with a faculty coach and university supervisor to compete their semester-long student teaching practicum in elementary schools throughout the state. For students seeking the additional middle school endorsement, additional courses in a selected content area are required, in addition to a Middle School Practicum course and a split student teaching placement in both an elementary and middle school setting during the final semester.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

To begin at Longwood in stride with other Elementary Education or Elementary/Middle School Education students, it’s important to take the required Content Courses that work toward the degree and cover competencies for state licensure. These include courses in biology, physics, history, political science, geography, and math, and serve as equivalents for Longwood’s 100 and 200-level introductory Content Courses. Students should also take equivalent courses to replace Longwood’s three introductory Professional Education Courses, which include Human Growth and Development, Introduction to the Teaching Profession, and Special Education/Introduction to Assessment. Students who are seeking the additional endorsement in Middle School education will also need to take additional courses in the content area of their choice (math, science, history, or English). Finally, while not required for admission to Longwood, students need to receive passing scores on the Virginia Communication Literacy Assessment (VCLA) which is required for teacher licensure in the state of Virginia and for admittance into Longwood’s Teacher Preparation Program.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Longwood University within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses
Doing More With Your Degree • During their time at Longwood, students have opportunities to become Teacher Researchers and to present their findings at Research Symposiums held on campus every semester. • Students engage in a variety of authentic field experiences in PK-6 (elementary licensure) and/or 6-8 (middle school endorsement) classrooms equaling 150+ hours in the field during the two semesters prior to student teaching. Engaging in these field experiences early and often allow students to feel comfortable in classroom settings and equip them for success during their student teaching semester. • Students are able to complete their student teaching experiences throughout the state under the direction of their University Supervisor. Students also receive support from one of their education professors who serves as a Faculty Coach and meets with small cohorts of students during a weekly virtual seminar. This enables Longwood’s student teachers to feel connected and supported even as they complete their field experiences from a variety of locations.
Program Successes & Highlights • Longwood has been training Virginia teachers since 1839, and graduates are highly sought after by school divisions across the state. • At Longwood, field experiences are embedded into coursework, so students can work closely with their professors to implement class content in authentic settings. • Students benefit from small class sizes, innovative course content, and hands-on field observations with full-time faculty who are experts in their areas of study. • Longwood boasts of 100% job placement upon graduation with many students being offered teaching positions during their student teaching semester prior to graduation. Successful completion of the degree makes students automatically eligible for a Virginia teaching license.
