Uniform Certificate of General Studies

Certificate
Eastern Shore Community College

The Uniform Certificate of General Studies (Plan Code 695) is intended to provide students the opportunity to take courses to meet a subset of lower level general education requirements at a four-year college or university. The Certificate is not intended to represent a comprehensive general education core or to insure the same ease of transferability as the transfer degrees. Students enrolled in the Certificate program may apply all credits earned to the college’s Associate of Science degree in Education, Engineering, General Studies or Science. Students enrolled in Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts may also apply all credits earned to the UCGS. Under current guidelines, Federal financial aid cannot be used to enroll in the Uniform Certificate of General Studies program. Students intending to use financial aid should enroll in one of the college’s AS & AA transfer degree programs.

Outcomes

Students will be able to: Explore, interpret, and represent the human experience and cultural awareness through the arts and social sciences. Read, write and analyze effectively across a number of disciplines. Integrate and apply the fundamental principles of scientific inquiry, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

Considerations for Selecting Degree The Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS) is a one-year college program in which 30-34 credits are transferable and satisfy lower-division general education requirements at any Virginia public institution of higher education. Passport is a subset of UCGS.
Considerations When Selecting Courses

Students must select a course for each block from the official UCGS course list. Students should pick courses that align with their transfer program.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Eastern Shore Community College within your first year via College Connect
Program Requirements Beyond Specific Courses All courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.
Doing More With Your Degree You are encouraged to continue on to the Associate Degree. The more credits you earn prior to transfer, the better your chances of completing a Bachelor's Degree.
