MUS103: Music Appreciation

Important in the general education of the college student who is nonmusic major, the course provides the foundation for a lifetime of broadening experiences in the enjoyment of music. The course presents the element, structure, and history of music with major emphasis on developing listening skills and acquiring a basic repertoire of varied examples of music literature.

  • Name the major composers of each era and their major works;
  • Describe musical forms and genres as they relate to historical eras;
  • Identify how social and historical forces in Western Europe shaped compositions, composers, and genres
  • Analyze and describe examples of music using the appropriate music terms;
  • Reflect on the experience of attending a live music performance;
  • Listen accurately to music and be able to identify: a) title, composer, genre, and stylistic era of several compositions by listening (only) to previously distributed recordings, and b) instruments by sound by listening (only).
  • Orally present information clearly, precisely, and correctly; and
  • Acquire, organize, document, and present written information clearly, precisely, and correctly.
