This course continues the discussion of the physical and chemical properties of organic compounds and their relationship to structure. Functional groups are studied systematically. Modern spectroscopic techniques are discussed.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

- Using IUPAC nomenclature rules, name and draw unambiguous structures for substituted aromatic compounds, aldehydes ketones, carboxylic acids, esters amides, ethers, epoxides, sulfides and thiols and organometallics.
- Use special names and structures of aniline, anisole, acetophenone, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, phenol, styrene, toluene, xylenes , naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, pyridine, pyrrole, furan, and thiophene.
- Fully describe the reaction of aromatic side chains in terms of the effect of the ring on reaction rate and regioselectivity.
- Describe and apply electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions to organic synthesis.
- Write reactions of organometallics as bases and reactions to form alcohols and reactions involving copper, zinc and mercury.
- Write reactions to show the reduction of aldehydes, ketones, acids, and esters.
- Write reactions to describe the oxidation of alcohols and the formation and
- Descsribe nucleophic addition, halogenation and oxidation reactions of aldehydes and ketones.
- Describe aldol addition and condensation reactions and additions to unsaturated carbonyl compounds.
