Transfer Guidance

Guaranteed Admission Agreement

  • Students with a minimum 2.5 GPA in transferable courses from a Virginia Community College are guaranteed admission to Roanoke College and to all major programs at the college. Students must be in good standing with their prior institution for both academics and conduct.

  • Students with GPAs 2.2–2.5 are encouraged to apply. We always review individual cases.

  • Students are welcome to consider transfer prior to completion of all requirements shown as “Complete at Community College” and can discuss what additional Roanoke College courses will be needed to complete their degree. They can also discuss using a reverse transfer to complete their Associate Degree if desired. Earlier transfer allows earlier access to additional opportunities at Roanoke College such as study away and experiential learning.

  • Please visit the TransferVirginia.org portal to find requirements for different majors (Transfer Tools) and Transfer Guides that outline course requirements for specific majors (Resource Center).

Important Links & Dates

  • Transfer Info, Application & Financial Aid Information: www.roanoke.edu/transfer

  • Admission Application: By May 15 for Fall start at www.roanoke.edu/transfer. Later applications may be considered. By November 15 for Spring start.

  • Early Admission Application and Deposit: By March 1 to register for Fall courses with continuing students and get best course and residence hall selection.

  • FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid: For highest aid, submit by March 1. See https://studentaid.gov

What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses?

  • If you aren’t ready for calculus or higher levels of math, take pre-calculus to prepare.

  • Take world language at community college if you are not already proficient. Roanoke College’s foreign language requirement is through the 201 level. If you are starting a new language, that will require 3 semesters. Placement based upon high school study will reduce this. The requirement is waived for native speakers of languages other than English. ASL is not accepted.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, and complete your first math and English courses in your first year.

  • Taking MTH 288 or CSC 208 will make finishing your math major at Roanoke College much easier.

  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Roanoke College within your first year. College Connect is available in your account at www.TransferVirginia.org

  • **Global Requirement: One course satisfying any requirement, focused on global issues or a non-Western culture; may be completed at VCCS or Roanoke College.

Is This Degree Right For Me?

What Is The Impact On My Degree Of Work I Have Already Completed?

  • Catalog Year: Upon enrollment, you may choose to follow either Roanoke’s most recent catalog or any from the prior 2 years.

Is This College Right For Me?
