The Medical Assisting certificate program (Plan Code 166) prepares individuals as multi-skilled health care practitioners who are competent in urgent care, physician’s offices, hospitals, and long term care environments. Graduates will be prepared to perform traditional medical assistant responsibilities to include clinical and administrative duties. Clinical functions could include, but are not limited to, direct patient care and preparation, ECG, phlebotomy, and pharmacology. Administrative duties include scheduling appointments, maintaining patient records, bookkeeping, and billing and insurance processing. (NCCT, 2017). Upon completion of the program students are eligible to take the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) for certification as a Medical Assistant (NCMA).

Considerations When Selecting Courses

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year
  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Eastern Shore Community College within your first year

Transfer Guidance Element What You Need to Know
Associate Transfer Degree Completion Students must earn 25% of their credits at ESCC for an Associate degree from our institution. Students who transfer to ESCC with a completed Associate or Bachelor's degree will be awarded SDV 100 and will have their transcript evaluated for other course transfer.

Completion of Associate Degree Concurrent with High School ESCC does not distinguish between students earning an associate degree concurrently, while in high school, or after high school graduation.
