The Department of Kinetic Imaging prepares students to use video, animation and sound for the purpose of art-making, self-expression and experimentation. The program is designed for students who want to study video art, sound design and experimental two- and three-dimensional animation. Emphasis is placed on artistic uses of the media.
Outcomes
Upon completing this program, students will know and know how to do the following: Students will demonstrate the ability to create media art that is conceptually grounded and evidences individual reflection and critical inquiry. Students will be able to make appropriate choices of media and presentation to support the conceptual intent of their work. Students will demonstrate the ability to construct meaning, synthesize ideas, ask pertinent questions and identify resources. Students will be able to successfully bring critical analysis and review to collaborative critique sessions and also to written responses. Students will demonstrate an advanced level of skills in their use of technology and tools for the production of video, animation, sound and emerging media. This includes a wide range of technology in regards to both equipment and software.

Considerations When Selecting Courses |
Kinetic Imaging (KI) fosters 5 main disciplines: Video, 2D Animation, Sound, 3D Computer Animation, Emerging Media. As an experimental media arts program, students are encouraged to work between and across all 5 disciplines. Studio class in each individual area (video, etc) are required for sophomores. Moving into junior year, there’s more focus on integration (animation with original sound design for example) and eventually to a larger senior project.

Program Successes & Highlights | Kinetic Imaging uniquely hosts an annual internship fair, connecting our students with numerous industry and arts-based organizations in the Richmond area. Our students have gone on to work in countless fields including working as lead animators, game and app designers, sound designers, teachers, video editors for commercial film, game and television. |

Associate Transfer Degree Completion | Students who earn an Associate of Arts, Associate of Arts & Sciences, Associate of Fine Arts, Associate of Science, General Education Certificate, or Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System, Richard Bland College, or the College of Southern Maryland may be eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Admission Agreement. Students with one of these degrees may also be eligible to have the majority of their general education requirements waived. Students who have earned a transfer-oriented associate degree from any regionally accredited institution or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies from the Virginia Community College System before enrolling at VCU will have their General Education requirements satisfied. The Uniform Certificate of General Studies is recommended for this major. |
