Sweet Briar College
The English and creative writing program employs a studio curriculum with an emphasis on project-based learning. Special topics classes across genres - and in new and evolving genres - ask students to engage in directed readings and sustained individual creative projects. We train students to engage with texts in the way that working writers do, dissolving the boundary between critical engagement and creative response and helping students discover that they grow as writers, as readers, and as human beings through explorations of both canonical and contemporary works of literature and through creative practice.

| Program Requirement Notes | Program Requirement Notes This major requires 36.0 hours of coursework. Required Courses: Literary Studio. Additional Required Electives: Three 200-level English and Creative Writing Courses; Three 300-level English and Creative Writing courses; and Four, three-credit courses selected from Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts OR Four three-credit courses related to student's writing-related interests (selected with advisor guidance). |

During the first year, students should complete ENCW 101: Introduction to Literary Studio, a course that offers instruction in both reading and writing poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.

| Doing More With Your Degree | The ability to communicate effectively and imaginatively can be a valuable assets in any academic field and subsequent employment. English and Creative Writing majors often also major in Psychology, Business, and other artistic disciplines, and many complete the process for certification as teachers. |
