Uniform Certificate of General Studies

The Uniform Certificate of General Studies includes eleven courses required for MGCC Associate of Arts and MGCC Associate of Sciences degrees. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of courses in general computer application, English, and mathematics, as well as social sciences, humanities and natural sciences.
Outcomes
The Uniform Certificate of General Studies is awarded to students who complete a balanced program of general topics. This award may be used to enhance credentials to seek employment or as the first-step toward earning an Associate Degree. The Certificate is ideal for those who may be unsure about a major, career field or specific pathway but who want to pursue studies beyond the secondary level.

This program is a smaller package of courses (16 credits for Passport and 31-32 credits for UCGS) that are considered the foundation for Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and other transferable associate degrees. When completed following specific guidelines, both the Passport and UCGS are transferable to all public 4-year and most private 4-year institutions in Virginia and apply towards lower-level general education requirements.
