GOVT202: The U.S. in World Affairs
A study of world politics and how it influences the United States and its relationship with other countries. The Cold War from containment to the Soviet collapse will be examined, but emphasis will be on current political, economic and social problems. Discussion of current affairs will be frequent and culminate with the International Forum at which time a series of distinguished representatives of foreign powers visit both the campus and the classroom.

Learning Objectives and Outcomes

- Trace the development of U.S. foreign policy since 1900 and define and identify different policies, including isolationism, pacifism, and expansionism.
- Describe U.S. foreign policy during the Cold War and assess the application of these policies in various geopolitical contexts.
- Identify and contextualize important dates, names, places, events, ideas, and movements in U.S. foreign policy from 1900 to the present.
- Analyze current U.S. policy concerning global challenges, including those involving human rights, environmental concerns, demographic movements, international security and terrorism, and economic issues.
- Evaluate threats arising from global challenges and develop resolutions to such challenges.
- Demonstrate knowledge through college-level oral and written communication.
