Important Links & Dates

What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses?

  • Complete your English courses and first math course in your first year.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered. For help, see Transfer Steps and Resource Center at www.TransferVirginia.org

  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and an admissions counselor at Radford University within your first year. College Connect is available in your account at www.TransferVirginia.org

Is This Degree Right For Me?

  • History majors may earn either a Bachelor of Science degree or a Bachelor of Arts degree. The Bachelor of Science degree prepares you for careers in business, law or government. The Bachelor of Arts degree prepares you for similar careers and is recommended for students planning graduate work in history or related fields of study. Careful planning of the undergraduate program, with supplementary courses in other fields, can equip you for future positions in libraries, museums, archives or similar institutions and for research-oriented occupations.

  • If you would like a career as a professional educator teaching social studies in a middle school or a high school, the Social Sciences program is the program for you. Social Sciences is an interdisciplinary major, the primary purpose of which is to provide licensure to teach social studies at the secondary level (high school and middle school). In addition, there is a Non-Teaching Option for students who are unable to complete the Teaching Option.

  • By studying history at Radford University, you will explore the past to understand the present, and you will learn to think, research, write, and speak—analytically and effectively, universal skills that are applicable to a wide variety of fields.

  • The Department of History’s Center for Archives and Digital History is a place where one can learn and apply practical skills in the preservation and organization of historical documents. Students work directly with growing collections of letters, diaries, manuscripts and other documents.

What Is The Impact On My Degree Of Work I Have Already Completed?

  • Associate Transfer Degree Completion: The completion of the transfer-oriented degree program will satisfy the REAL Curriculum (lower division/general education) requirements. Students will need to complete all other University, college, and departmental requirements in order to obtain the baccalaureate degree from RU.

  • Dual Enrollment – Completion of Associate Degree in HS: Students completing the associate degree in high school should apply using the freshman application. If admitted, the student will receive the benefits associated with the transferable associate degree (as noted prior).

  • Credit for Prior Learning: AP, IB, and CLEP are evaluated for credits (based on receipt and evaluation of official scores).

  • Catalog Year: Students will be subject to the catalog in effect at the time of enrollment at RU unless otherwise requested.
