Guaranteed Admission Agreement Requirements

Students who meet the prescribed curriculum and the criteria below are guaranteed admission into Old Dominion University.

This agreement does not guarantee your enrollment in any specific major.

Earn a transferable associate degree (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Arts and Science, and Associate of General Studies at approved institutions only)

Students may submit a Letter of Intent to Transfer after completion of 15 transferrable credits, 2.5 or higher GPA, and 90 days prior to graduation from a VCCS institution. The letter of intent is not required for admission to ODU.

Graduate with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

Earn a grade of "C" or higher in each community college course applicable to the transfer-oriented associate degree program

Enroll at ODU within one year of completing the transfer-oriented associate degree

If you complete the associate degree but haven't taken all of the recommended courses, you may still be able to pursue a Public Health degree at Old Dominion University, but your time to graduation may be impacted.

The curriculum incorporates rigorous coursework in epidemiology and biostatistics, social and behavioral aspects of health, the United States healthcare delivery system, healthcare ethics, the natural sciences, health policy and environmental health issues, among other areas.

Associate Transfer Degree Completion: Lower Division General Education Requirements will be waived for transferable associate degrees. Students completing an AS in General Studies degree recognized by SCHEV are eligible for the waiver as long as they are completing a transfer degree approved by SCHEV at a VCCS.

Dual Enrollment – Completion of Associate Degree in HS: The GAA at ODU applies to students who have earned an associate degree during high school. Students should apply as a freshman applicant and will receive the benefits associated with the transferable associated degree if admitted.

Credit for Prior Learning: ODU accepts credits from prior learning to include AP, IB, CLEP, and Cambridge Advanced A/S.

Catalog Year: Undergraduate students may choose to graduate under the catalog in effect of their first enrollment at ODU or any subsequent catalog provided that the students graduate within six years from the date of first enrollment.

Students who have five or more years of supervisory or management experience in a public health field can apply for a Prior Learning ePortfolio Challenge, which could replace the internship course.

The program also provides students with courses in basic research methods necessary for assessment, analysis, communication, research, problem solving, and critical thinking abilities in the emerging emphasis on evidence-based health care and public health. Students will have the opportunity to gain practical public health exposure and mentoring in clinical, research, or community settings.

The Public Health major is available in a hybrid format with some courses offered online and some in person. The program can also be completed fully online to increase flexibility for students.

Other Than Classes, Are There Other Program Requirements?

Students need to earn a C or better in PUBH 200, ENGL 110c, BIOL 121N/BIOL 122N, BIOL 123N/BIOL 124N, CHEM 121/CHEM 122N, MATH 162N and STAT 130M.

Some internship sites may require the student to complete a criminal background check, drug screening, computer-based training, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training, proof of vaccination status, and/or other relevant responsibilities needed to train in public health organizations prior to beginning the internship.

As part of the course assessment, students are required to develop an electronic portfolio (ePortfolio). The ePortfolio is a collection of work completed by the student during the internship and can be used to present the student's "professional" or digital self to others. In addition to submitting an ePortfolio, students must submit a comprehensive attendance record that covers the entire internship period.
