Transfer Guidance

Guaranteed Admission Agreement Requirements

  • By meeting the following criteria, students are eligible for completion of all Foundation-level courses as well as the Integrating World Languages Perspectives-level course associated with LU's Civitae general education experience.

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a four-point scale, computed as shown on the two-year institution transcript.

  • Earn a grade of "C" (2.0) or higher in each community college course.

  • Disciplinary records are reviewed and evaluated on a case-by-case basis and could affect the student's eligibility.

  • Students must complete an AA, AS, or AA&S degree through the VCCS with at least 60 credits.

  • Submit to the LU Admissions Office an official transcript showing completion of the applicable associate's degree. Until LU receives the official transcript showing degree conferred, the terms of the GAA will not be applied.

  • Please visit the Transfer Virginia portal (www.TransferVirginia.org) to find course requirements for different majors (Transfer Tools) and Transfer Guides that outline course requirements for specific majors (Resource Center).

Important Links & Dates

What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses?

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, and complete your first math and English courses in your first year. For help, see Transfer Steps and Resource Center (www.TransferVirginia.org).

  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Longwood within your first year. Use the College Connect feature in the portal (www.TransferVirginia.org).

  • Students interested in a minor should plan to take preliminary coursework as available.

  • To complete all Longwood requirements in two years, careful planning will be necessary. Students should choose their associate degree electives carefully to increase the likelihood of completing the Longwood degree in four semesters. It is not uncommon for transfers into this major to take five semesters.

Is This Degree Right For Me?

  • Modern Languages. Students with an interest in the diversity of the world and a passion for French, German, and/or Spanish will find a home here. Required courses in culture, history, literature, and language will prepare the student for a semester abroad, which would typically be scheduled in the spring of the junior year, and for a career built on communication and global understanding.

  • ART. A BFA degree celebrates tactile learning, requiring weekly committed studio hours, yearly assessments or portfolio reviews, and a junior proposal that results in a senior exhibition at the Longwood Center of the Visual Arts. An art educator is a practicing artist (or art historian) as well as an educator. This degree requires transportation to reach practicum sites.

  • MUSC. The Bachelor of Music in Education (Instrumental or Choral track) leads to pre-K-12 teacher certification. Prior musical experience is necessary for successful performance in the program, and all students who designate this major must audition.

  • THEA. If you want to be a teacher, Longwood is the place to be. You will be required to complete two basic education courses, pass the VCLA, and meet the GPA as required by the Office of Teacher Prep before other education courses can be taken. After being accepted into teacher prep, which your goal should be no later than the end of your first semester at Longwood at least 50% of your classes will be education courses.

  • HPE. The PK-12 Licensure concentration prepares students to meet State licensure requirements to teach both health and physical education from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Students can also elect to become endorsed to teach Driver Education. Our program is a competency-based, fieldwork intensive curriculum that ensures students obtain teaching experiences throughout their academic career. As a result, graduates enter the workforce confident in their skills and ability to deal with the many challenges and issues in the schools today.

What Is The Impact On My Degree Of Work I Have Already Completed?

  • Associate Transfer Degree Completion: Completion of all Foundation-level courses as well as the Integrating World Languages Perspectives-level course associated with LU's Civitae general education experience.

  • Credit for Prior Learning: LU accepts credit for CLEP, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, military training/experience, or other forms of advanced standing, which will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Students under this GAA who have credit for prior learning receive the overarching benefits of the GAA but must present documentation from the original agency or experience as part of a course-by-course credit evaluation to determine applicability to specific coursework or major requirements.

  • Catalog Year: In accord with state policy, students may choose the catalog in effect at the time they enroll at Longwood or the one that applies to continuous full-time students at their class level.

  • Completion of Associate Degree in HS through Dual Enrollment: High school students who have earned an applicable associate's degree concurrent with high school graduation are not eligible for guaranteed admission under the terms of this agreement. Such students are considered freshman applicants with transfer credit. If admitted, no distinction will be made by LU regarding college courses applicable to the transferable associate's degree that are completed through dual enrollment. Those students completing applicable associate's degrees, upon receipt of the final official transcript demonstrating completion of the GAA requirements, will be awarded a waiver for Foundation-level courses as well as the Integrating World Languages Perspectives-level course. However, the following will be required of these students to support their transition to Longwood: a. They must attend freshman orientation. b. They must live in on-campus housing unless qualified for a release. On-campus housing is guaranteed for these students. c. They must enroll and pass ENGL 265, The Writing and Rhetoric of Citizenship.

Each semester, an involvement fair helps students find organizations that are the right fit for them to make their time at Longwood even more meaningful.

Did You Know That…

  • Completing your associate's transfer degree post-high school satisfies all lower-division general education requirements and increases the likelihood of completing your bachelor's degree?

  • Exceeding three years or 90 credits at your community college means you may have exhausted your financial aid at that college and have limited your future financial aid at Longwood University?

What Can I Do With This Degree?

Program Successes & Highlights

  • Longwood has been training Virginia teachers since 1839, and graduates are highly sought after by school divisions across the state.

  • Modern Languages. 100% placement rate for students who complete the major and seek employment in the classroom. World language has been identified as a critical need in Virginia's schools.

  • ART. All art education students complete multiple practicums with diverse populations. Students also create a body of work (or art historical research) that is professionally and publicly exhibited in the community. Our graduates establish vital mentor-mentee relationships with faculty, members of the artistic community and educators as a touchstone to further their careers. Recent graduates have transitioned into teaching positions throughout Virginia and out of state. Recent graduates have also transitioned into art therapy graduate programs as well as transitioned into Longwood's +1 special education program where students teach while earning their special education degree.

  • MUSC. Longwood's Music Education majors are sought after in state schools. Nearly 100% of our graduates accept a teaching position upon graduation.

  • THEA. Longwood theatre teachers get jobs because they are ready to go to work upon graduation. At least 90% of our theatre educators seeking work in their field are hired by schools where they have had a successful field placement.

  • HPE. All Health and Physical Education: Pk-12 Licensure graduates secure full-time employment after leaving Longwood.

What Are My Chances For Getting Accepted?

  • Typically, Longwood admits 85% of transfer applicants who seek admission outside of the GAA. The average GPA for admitted transfer students tends to be 3.2-3.5.

  • Learn more at www.TransferVirginia.org.

Do More With Your Degree!

  • Modern Languages. Transfer students planning to graduate in 4 semesters will follow advising very carefully, since one of those semesters would typically be spent abroad and another would be spent in the classroom student-teaching.

  • ART. Majors in this program have a diverse studio background and select a mini-concentration in one of the following areas: art history, artists books and printmaking, design in crafts, graphic design, painting and drawing or photography. Artistic opportunities include participating in summer craft school programs/internships, completing apprenticeships, and connecting with professionals through our Working Artist Program and Visiting Artist workshops. Students will have many hours of practicum experience to help hone theory into practice. Art education graduates may transition into Longwood's graduate program preparing students for Special Education licensure. Art education students with a minor in psychology have successfully transitioned into Masters in Art Therapy programs.

  • MUSC. Students will benefit from numerous practicum experiences throughout the curriculum well before their student-teaching semester.

  • THEA. In this program, you will have four field experiences prior to your student teaching. Students can consider a minor in Music, History, or English; however, adding a minor will add additional time to your tenure here at Longwood.

  • HPE. Pk-12 Licensure students are eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist Exam (CHES). In addition, HPE students can pair their major with the Therapeutic Activities minor, which allows them to lead and implement goal-based recreational activities in various settings.

Other Than Classes, Are There Other Program Requirements?

  • An internship (student teaching) is required in the program.

  • Students will need a vehicle for student teaching and other field experiences.
