Transfer Guidance

Guaranteed Admission Agreement Requirements

• By meeting the following criteria, students are eligible for completion of all Foundation-level courses as well as the Integrating World Languages Perspectives-level course associated with LU's Civitae general education experience.

• A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a four-point scale, computed as shown on the two-year institution transcript.

• Earn a grade of "C" (2.0) or higher in each community college course.

• Disciplinary records are reviewed and evaluated on a case-by-case basis and could affect the student's eligibility.

• Students must complete an AA, AS, or AA&S degree through the VCCS with at least 60 credits.

• Submit to the LU Admissions Office an official transcript showing completion of the applicable associate's degree. Until LU receives the official transcript showing degree conferred, the terms of the GAA will not be applied.

What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses?

• Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, and complete your first math and English courses in your first year. For help, see Transfer Steps and Resource Center (www.TransferVirginia.org).

• Connect with an advisor at your community college and Longwood within your first year. Use the College Connect feature in the portal (www.TransferVirginia.org).

• Students interested in a minor should plan to take preliminary coursework as available.

• To complete all Longwood requirements in two years, careful planning will be necessary. Students should choose their associate degree electives carefully to increase the likelihood of completing the Longwood degree in four semesters. It is not uncommon for transfers into this major to take five semesters.

Is This Degree Right For Me?

• English. This program is somewhat flexible but has a heavy reading load in some classes and writing is a key component. In order to finish in 4 semesters, it will be critical to carefully follow advising. It may be necessary to take 18 credits in some semesters.

• History. This program includes a large number of courses that require historical as well as other forms of research and writing. It also entails preparing and delivering oral presentations. There are four field experiences, three of which require the ability to drive to the schools in which students will complete their teaching assignments.

• Biology. This program offers many opportunities for students to engage in research and practical hands-on experiences in the laboratory and in the field. It also offers multiple opportunities for gaining practical experience in the classroom.

• Chemistry. A chemistry degree with secondary education concentration will prepare you to teach chemistry at the secondary level. You will complete all requirements for chemistry as well as Virginia teacher licensure, leading to immediate employability upon graduation. A strong foundation in chemistry with additional coursework in biology and environmental science will also leave you with the option to teach those subjects. The degree is math intensive, requiring statistics and calculus up through calculus II. All chemistry students participate in a research experience during their time at Longwood. The program is small, allowing a lot of student interaction with faculty, but chemistry students must be prepared to work hard, learn, and be a part of a team.

• Mathematics. A mathematics degree with a secondary education concentration will prepare you teach mathematics at the secondary level. The program is small and taught by both mathematics and mathematics education faculty.

• Physics. This degree is great for students that like Math, but prefer to teach about more practical applications.

What Is The Impact On My Degree Of Work I Have Already Completed?

• Associate Transfer Degree Completion: Completion of all Foundation-level courses as well as the Integrating World Languages Perspectives-level course associated with LU's Civitae general education experience.

• Credit for Prior Learning: LU accepts credit for CLEP, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, military training/experience, or other forms of advanced standing, which will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Students under this GAA who have credit for prior learning receive the overarching benefits of the GAA but must present documentation from the original agency or experience as part of a course-by-course credit evaluation to determine applicability to specific coursework or major requirements.

• Catalog Year: In accord with state policy, students may choose the catalog in effect at the time they enroll at Longwood or the one that applies to continuous full-time students at their class level.

• Completion of Associate Degree in HS through Dual Enrollment: High school students who have earned an applicable associate's degree concurrent with high school graduation are not eligible for guaranteed admission under the terms of this agreement. Such students are considered freshman applicants with transfer credit. If admitted, no distinction will be made by LU regarding college courses applicable to the transferable associate's degree that are completed through dual enrollment. Those students completing applicable associate's degrees, upon receipt of the final official transcript demonstrating completion of the GAA requirements, will be awarded a waiver for Foundation-level courses as well as the Integrating World Languages Perspectives-level course. However, the following will be required of these students to support their transition to Longwood: a. They must attend freshman orientation. b. They must live in on-campus housing unless qualified for a release. On-campus housing is guaranteed for these students. c. They must enroll and pass ENGL 265, The Writing and Rhetoric of Citizenship.

• ENGL. 100% placement rate for this program, and easily completed in two years if advising recommendations are followed. Student teaching internships are in the final semester and we mentor you throughout the process.

• HIST. Students in this program benefit from our variety of teaching experiences and field placements that build the content knowledge and pedagogical skills necessary to work effectively with groups of diverse learners. Historically, graduates from Longwood are highly qualified and much sought after on the job market. We have an excellent job placement record in the history and social science secondary ed. teacher prep program. Our recent graduates work in school systems across the state and even in Alaska.

• BIOL. Students completing this program are successful obtaining competitive teaching positions in public and private schools throughout the state and region.

• CHEM. Recent graduates from the chemistry secondary education program have a 100% job placement rate. Our graduates teach across Virginia and the licensure is easily transferable to another state.

• MATH. Graduates of this program generally become mathematics teachers or continue on to graduate school. Graduates of this program are in high demand and will be able to find work in the teaching profession after graduating from this program.

• Typically, Longwood admits 85% of transfer applicants who seek admission outside of the GAA. The average GPA for admitted transfer students tends to be 3.2-3.5.

Do More With Your Degree!

• ENGL. Students in this program have minored in Children's Literature and Creative Writing in recent years. There are ample opportunities for student research collaborations.

• HIST. This concentration within the history major requires four courses of political science, and so it is very possible to add a minor in that field by taking two additional political science courses. A minor in geography is also possible to achieve with careful scheduling.

• BIOL. Students can deepen their knowledge by adding a minor in Environmental Science or Geographic Information Science.

• CHEM. Students in the science education concentration have very busy schedules, but usually have room for a minor in biology or environmental science. A key part of the program is placements with schools in the nearby area, where they get hands-on experience with experienced teachers.

• MATH. Students in this program (especially as a transfer student) will be very busy completing the classes required for the major. Some students work as a tutor in the tutoring center.

• PHYS. Students complete many teaching experiences in the classroom throughout the program.
