Enrollment/Admission Planning_Creating a Personal Statement
Read this document to learn about tips for developing a personal statement related to your academic pursuits.
Colleges and universities may request a personal statement as part of your college application. Generally, the statement is open-ended, allowing you to decide what information to include. If you’re unsure about what to write, you might consider these questions:
-
Was there a particular experience in your life that inspired you to continue your education?
-
Has your family played a role in your decision about college?
-
Were there high school classes that caused you to want to study the subjects further? Were there teachers who encouraged you to continue your studies?
-
Why do you want to attend this particular college/university?
-
What are your educational and/or career goals?
-
What is something unique about you?
-
What can you contribute to the student community, to an organization on campus, or to the institutional mission?
-
How will earning a degree from this institution prepare you for your chosen career?
Next Steps: Consult with a teacher, guidance counselor, family member or friend to give you feedback about your personal statement.
