Colleges and universities do not generally offer admission interviews. In the event you select a college that does offer an interview, review this document for tips on achieving a successful one.

  • Admission representatives will likely focus on your interests, experiences, academic work, and extracurricular activities.

  • You will want to have a sense of what questions you may be asked, and to prepare yourself for providing answers to them. Such questions may include:

    • What interests you about this institution?

    • What are your career goals after graduation?

    • What did you learn about yourself from previous courses you’ve taken?

    • How do you believe this college will help you achieve your career goals?

  • You will want to have questions for the admission representative so that you will have a good sense of what the college offers, relative to your career goals. Questions can include areas such as:

    • Faculty teaching and mentoring

    • Campus life during the week and on weekends

    • Average class size

    • Alumni achievements

    • Employment opportunities for graduates of specific majors

  • Determine whether or not this college is a good fit for you.

  • Relax and enjoy the conversation with the admission representative.

Next steps: Research the websites of colleges you’re considering. Find out if they offer interviews to interested students. Meet with an advisor who can help you plan for an interview, if it’s available to you.
