What is an Associate Degree?
An associate degree is an undergraduate degree normally awarded after at least two years of full-time study. It is the first degree level available to high school graduates. The associate degree provides basic academic knowledge and is the foundation to further undergraduate study. The following associate degree programs are generally available in Virginia.
Associate of Arts Degree (AA)
An Associate of Arts degree is a good building block toward a bachelor’s degree. It can prepare you for a degree in the social sciences, liberal arts, humanities, history, languages, English, fine arts, and similar areas. There are typically fewer mathematics and science requirements than for an Associate in Science or an Associate in Arts and Sciences degree. The Associate of Art is a good general transfer degree. It is composed of general education courses and electives that can be tailored toward the intended major. This degree type should be considered in preparing for transfer into a four-year degree program.
Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree (AA&S)
An Associate of Arts and Sciences degree provides a solid foundation for a bachelor’s degree. It can prepare you for a degree in mathematics, sciences, social sciences, liberal arts, humanities, history, languages, English, fine arts, etc. The Associate of Art and Sciences is a good general transfer degree, composed of general education courses and electives that can be tailored toward the intended major. This degree type should be considered in preparing for transfer into a four-year degree program.
Associate of Science Degree (A.S.)
An Associate of Science degree is a strong program that can lead to a bachelor’s degree. It provides preparation for a major in biological sciences, computer sciences, mathematics, physical and natural sciences. The Associate of Science is a good general transfer degree. It includes general education courses and electives that can be tailored toward the intended major. This degree type should be considered in preparing for transfer into a four-year degree program.
Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S)
An Associate of Applied Science degree is a terminal degree that prepares students for an entry-level career. This degree provides technical skills and career preparation. With few electives, this degree is best for graduates who desire immediate entrance into a career. This degree transfers into skill-based programs and those with specified articulations or agreements. This degree type may be considered to enter the job market or to transfer into an articulated bachelor degree program.
